Here we go. The most powerful storm on the face of the earth is about to make a very close pass to our region. It has been a long time since we last had a hurricane, and it is so easy to forget how fickle these storms can be...

Why You Will Not See The Cruz Warrant Here

Posted by Kirk Varner, News Director on July 19th, 2010 at 05:30:41 pm, 4154 views

After some discussion amongst our newsroom staff today, I've made the decision not to post the full text of the arrest warrant in the case of Francsico Cruz, the 19 year old who is charged with the brutal rape and murder of 16 year-old Chloe Ottman last week in Waterbury.

It is not the kind of decision I make lightly, because our stated goal is to be as transparent as we can in bringing you the news each day. Whenever it is possible to share with you documents such as this, we usually do so, if only to allow those who want the ability to read all of the details of a particular crime.

But in this case, the horrific details on what the suspect alleged he did, are so graphic and disturbing that we were uncomfortable making them too easily accessible in their entirety.

Our reporter Erin Cox and web editor Rebecca Santillo have done an excellent job distilling the key details of what allegedly happened into our stories that will appear here at wtnh.com. They are graphic enough to tell you the story properly.

The full warrant will likely appear elsewhere online and that will be someone else's decision on what is acceptable for them to publish.

All I can say is that in 30-plus years of working in newsrooms and reading police documents about terrible crimes, this was just about the worst warrant I've ever come across, and so we won't be posting it here.

Busy Morning

Posted by Dr. Mel on July 19th, 2010 at 01:14:24 pm, 2610 views

We have had our share of active weather, but today, the weather put on an unusual show. Normally rain shrouds our cloud formations, but we got to see the strange formations today before the torrents of rain came along. A turbulent atmosphere was in vivid view. To many, it appeared that funnels were extending from the clouds. Even I saw a formation which could have been a rope funnel---a funnel shaped like a rope.

Passing of an Icon

Posted by Dr. Mel on June 29th, 2010 at 01:01:08 pm, 13712 views

In my nearly 14 years of fighting a form of terminal cancer, I have met many good friends, and I have lost more than just a few. But this week, I lost an acquaintance who may not have had cancer but a variety of other ailments including the suspicion of being poisoned by anti-freeze. The police are investigating the murder of Michael Collins who through his associations is known to most broadcasters in our area and beyond. It is a very sad passing.

It was a Tornado

Posted by Dr. Mel on June 25th, 2010 at 01:14:40 pm, 8632 views

Shortly before noon on Friday, the National Weather Service said that the storm which hit Bridgeport was in fact a tornado. It is called an EF1 level storm which is considered to be a "weak" storm, but winds of 100 mph is anything but weak. The EF1 category storm has winds of 73 to 113 mph. The storm hit just north of I-95 on Main Street, Nichols and Ceder. However, the damage profile in other areas resemble more straight-line winds than circular tornadic activity. How does the weather service determine if there has been a tornado?
