Tax deduction for Haiti quake relief

A question from our inbox this morning:
"I thought I heard that a person could claim a tax credit for a 2010 donation to relief efforts in Haiti on their 2009 tax return. Only heard this statement once, but would like to know if this is true or was I 'just dreaming'?"
No, you were not dreaming.
Yes, you can deduct contributions to Haiti Earthquake Relief if you donated between Jan. 11th and until March 1st. You can either take the deduction on your 2009 or 2010 tax return.
Of course there are rules. Read all the details at IRS.gov.

It is not self inflicted poverty in Haiti. The people did not do that to themselves. The Haitian government did. While the people lived in absolute crap housing, government officials lived in luxury.

The city of Hartford has assigned tax delinquencies to a company called XSPAND a j.P.Morgan Company.What they don't tell you is that this company is charging 18%on the delinquent amount. This company offers no payment arrangements. If the balance is not paid in full within six months you could see your home be sold for the delinquent tax plus interest. In this grave economic times the city should not be facilating the loss of home ownership.

If you dont pay your taxes, the city or state should do whatever is nessesary to get what is owed. I hate when people want something for nothing. If you are worried about your house being taken over PAY YOUR TAXES!!

how about aid for new orleans? they have been a mess for how many years?? and they get shafted down there. im so sick of helping other countries. screw um! when we go help, were not wanted and get shot at or the other govnt. gets upset were there. then when we leave, they get mad that we left them hanging. no more foreign aid till the usa is running smoothly without debt and all cities and states are taken care of, poor people in LA.
