Please. It's a CHRISTMAS TREE. Always was and ALWAYS WILL BE. Christmas is the birth of Jesus. Always was and ALWAYS WILL BE. Regardless of how hard the devil tries to push Jesus out of it - HE AIN'T GONNA SUCCEED. They want to have a "Holiday" then they can pick another season for it. December 25th is the birth of Jesus. Period.

And yes I am passionate about this. We need to take a stand. They've been trying to eliminate it for too long.

As far as the "Holiday Tree or Christmas Tree".........it was a "christmas tree" as long as I can remember ( I am 58...) and it STILL is.........SCREW the political "correctness" of it all......

So Ridiculous!!! 75% of Americans say they are Christians, so what is wrong with public displays acknowleding that. Obviously, we can't recognize every holiday so we should accommodate the majority of the people. If I decided to live in Iraq or Isreal, I wouldn't expect my Christianity to be celebrated.
It is just another way to discriminate against the only thing that is acceptable to discriminate and that is Christianity!! It's always this select minority that is making all the rules for the unwilling majority. We need to take a stand!

Speaking of holiday's blending together. I was just at Stop and Shop in Ansonia to get some Halloween candy and they are basically CLEANED out BUT they have aisles FULL of Christmas stuff. What's up with that???

We call Christmas by its name so we will call the trees we put up by their correct name...Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christams Tree.....but can we enjoy Halloween and Thanksgiving 1st or is their names changing too?

What happened to THANKSGIVING? I don't care if a nonChristian puts up a tree and calls it a holiday tree. But, what has happened to THE American holiday?

Well, it seems to be getting closer and closer to what I've been saying for a while, now, namely, that it won't belong before they start putting up the Christmas decorations on July 5! Then we'll be saying, "What? Christmas already?!?! Didn't we just have our Fourth of July picnic???"

Personally, I don't want to have anything to do with Christmas until the day after Thanksgiving at the earliest! It has become, sadly, so crassly commercialized it's sickening! >:-(

i have to agree,day after thanksgiving suits me just fine,,they are not giving the kids anything to look forward to these days,i remember when my mom didnt start till the after thanksgiving and i kept that tradition,,let's get through halloween first geesh people

Pretty soon Christmas won't be called Christmas any more. It will simply be call "The Holiday".

Its called a Christmas tree, not a holiday tree and for everyone that wants to call it a holiday tree or be PC about these days, answer me this then: When you were a kid growing up what did you call a Christmas tree? I can just about gurantee you, you called it just that a CHRISTMASS TREE, so stop your little PC show and move on. Its been a Christmas tree for decades and will always be called a Christmas tree for those that put up a "holiday tree",, do you put lights on it, do you put ornaments on it, garlin on it, a skirt around the bottom? Then my PC wanna be friend, you have a Christmas tree.

Ok, it drives me nuts when people say 75% of Americans are Christian, so we should call it a Christmas tree. You can call it anything you want. You can sing carols around it, and decorate it with pictures of Jesus and Mary, and the mule she rode in on if you want. That is as American as you can get. That is your right. The problems lies with a municipality calling it a Christmas tree, because it is then favoring one religion over another, and that is what is expressly forbidden in the Constitution. Now is it going to kill anyone for New Haven to call it a Christmas tree? No. But I guarantee you if the city decided to put a Muslim symbol there for the holiday season instead of a tree, those 75% who call themselves Christian, would "Jesus Freak Out". Having said all that, the most offensive thing in this blog is the fact that the writer will be giving out Snickers this Halloween. I feel slighted as a devoted Butterfinger fan.

1. I say if you can't call it by its real name (a "Christmas Tree") then don't even bother putting one up. It's offensive to Christians to be playing games with our tradition. I also think we should just cut to the chase and take Christmas off the government calendar. If it's unconstitutional to call something a "Christmas Tree", or to put up a cross or manger scene in a public place, then the government should stop endorsing the holiday - make everyone get up and go to work on December 24th and 25th! Let's just get cut to the chase. It seems like people like all the perks of "Christmas" (gifts, trees, lights, days off from school/work) without recognizing and respecting what it really is.

2. I think if the kind family in Shelton who donated this tree knew ahead of time it wouldn't be called a Christmas tree, they would have given it a second thought. I wonder what their take is on it? Maybe WTNH could do an investigation and ask people out on the street what they think of New Haven's uber-PC actions.

3. Last but not least, I think everyone should send a Christmas Card to the City of New Haven this year reminding the Mayor and his staff what holiday most of us are really celebrating on the 25th of December.

Ok here we start again on the political correctness. I say CHRISTMAS tree. Always was always will be. I am tired of having to change my ways for other nationalities and religions. I'm prior service, and during my time I travelled around a lot of the world. Nowhere else did I see such division in what to call a holiday. Since the creation of our country, it's been Christmas---if it isn't broke, don't fix it. If we take away Christmas, then let's take away all race- or gender- or religion-oriented holidays, like Black History month and Martin Luther King day and Easter and St Patricks Day and anything else that could possibly offend someone.
Seriously, if you don't like the way the country is run then go find another one that better suits your PC lifestyle. We were founded by Christians, and opened our doors to everyone else to come in and live their lives in freedom. Would you go into someone else's house and start telling them that they need to repaint and get new countertops because the existing ones offend you?
As far as Christmas, I like the old days when the season didn't start until the end of Thanksgiving. Growing up, we couldn't start singing carols or putting up decorations until Santa came out, which was normally at the end of the Thanksgiving parade.

My question to all of you is this: With all the outrage, who is going to step up to the plate and actually do something about this? If its so offensive, and the ACLU and others are motivated to make us remove Christ from Christmas, why aren't we who are in the majority motivated enough to defend our celebrations and traditions?

America was founded so that the people could live with freedom OF religion, to worship and celebrate as we so choose. Not freedom FROM religion. This is what we fought our independence for, and is one of the major foundations of our laws and customs. If we are angry enough to write in this forum about it, then we should be motivated to do something about it.

One thing I had written which this forum wouldn't allow because it was too long, was that it's hogwash to say it's unconstitutional for a municipality to call a Christmas tree what it is. That's not endorsement of religion, its a recognition of a HOLIDAY tradition.

KWANZAA is highly publicized, if it weren't, the minorities would protest. Jewish holidays are mentioned and publicized. You can even have a study of the Koran in a public school, but not a Bible study. Christianity is the ONLY religion that seems to ever be under attack, under the guise of Constitutionality. And, people, its because Christians don't stand up and defend it. Do something about it, don't just complain.

hate to bust folks bubbles - but the placing of a tree in the home was a pagan ritual started by the British Druids during winter solstice, adopted by the Romans for their celebration of Saturnalia and then adopted by Christians. That would make it a pagan action and was actually condemned as such by American parishioners back in 1851. Include the hanging of Mistletoe & the Yule log in there as well, 2 other pagan druidic rituals.

There is no "holiday tree" -- it's a Christmas tree that they are putting up but they could have waited for Thanksgiving to be celebrated before putting it up.

Store owners apparently love Christmas too - Christmas toys and Christmas cheer tell us that Thanksgiving's near.

Two months before Christmas, even before Halloween has come and gone, stores are filled with Christmas gifts and decorations already - holidays mean nothing to them except for the money they will make - it's disgusting. We make our own decorations - we use pine cones, carve ornaments from wood, we string popcorn to drape around the tree and we make our own gifts too - no store makes money on us.
