i was hoping some one at chan 8 would "blogg-itize" this today... as far as i'm concerned, that's a real bad-ass bob cat...first, the tail has that particular curve to it...secondly, i'm certain the foot prints would also tell...and thirdly, a house cat would certainly not go after a goose...and the bob cat in the photograph IS in the water, generaly house cats HATE the water... the quinnipiac river water basin is loaded with bob cats...

and...if a 14 year old is going to make up a story, it would be why she was out past her curfew...

we had one on our back porch about 2 months ago. we sat there and watched it for while (from inside our house) but then it heard us and jumped off the rail to the ground below ( at least 20 feet!)

arent they native here?? what is the big deal?

yes Virginia, there is a Bobcat

they got few in numbers but are coming back as of the 90's

the real arguments have been about the mountain lions, or panthers

state says no, but from eye witnesses I have talked to they ARE back

I know there are some in Cockaponsett

they generally shy from people but there have been attacks out west

for years the state denied the existence of coydogs, or coyote, or even wolf

we know they are back

I saw a wolf on 95 near 4mile river road one night

bears are back and increasing

fishers are back

hawks, eagles, all coming back

I think it's cool

oh yeah

the best way to tell a bobcat from a cat is their lower face points out to match their ears, stubby nose, tipped ears, this cat seems to have those and a normal cat won't

difference between a bobcat and panther

about 75lbs+, a 4-5foot long tail, and they will attack people

bobcat generally runaway, the one I saw did

if you are out hiking look up around rocks that are above you, panthers like to attack from above and come down on their prey

now bears, if a bear is following you, he is just curious

if he is pacing you, he is scoping you out, now you should be concerned

in Ct we only have black bears which are big dogs, the concern is when they wake up from hybernation, they may eat anything they are so hungry, the rest of the year they are mostly vegitarians......mostly

friends of ours have them at their house almost every night, they love sunflower seeds so she set up a feeder at the edge of their property

The cats head is a little large for a housecat and squared of like a bob,the tail must be a birth defect.
Or it is a cross between a house and a bob cat.

I don't think it is photoshop. Not familiar with bobcats, but it just might be one. Hey, we have everything else running around CT. why not a bobcat.

Maybe if people would stop knocking down all the wooded areas for condos and such, they wouldn't have to come around folks for food. We had a huge wooded area down the street from me for years, then they cleared it out for a new high school, which was NOT needed. Now we have deer all over the place. People are their own worst enemies.

I've seen a wildcat in Ct. in the Pachaug State Forest, but never heard of a Bobcat being here.
On the other hand, I never heard of Coyotes or Fisher Cats being in Ct., but they are now. So I think it could very well be a Bobcat.

I am one street down from teh top of a mountain ride( obviously I live on the side of it.. There is nothing for miles and miles. There is plenty of room for many many large and evasive creatures. There was no mistaking what was on our porch. It was huge! and definately not a cougar /mountain lion...and definately not one of my own cats!

now that they've over built tons of mcmansions in what was the country and farms these manhatten transferites can't handle deer in the road and on their lawns

too many people is the problem

I would like to believe that at last animals are taking a stand and coming back to reclaim the land they were driven away from by people who just "had to live out in the country".

Unfortunately, that is NOT the case as there is no place left for them to "reclaim".

I'm glad to see wildlife return to our areas and I hope to see many more -- I just hope that some "gun-happy" human critters don't get the OK to shoot them or take it upon themselves to kill them!

That picture is no photoshop --it is a bobcat - sure is a beautiful animal.

Bobcats in Connecticut are quite common now. There is no debate about that. As time goes on we will also see more mountain lions and more grey wolves. A grey wolf was actually shot in Mass. a little while back.

these people that had to live out in the country are truly the problem

I have a hard time understanding the mentality of moving from where you were and then demanding everything be exactly like it was where you were, or set up like you had imagined it in your idyllic little mind

kill all the deer, they might hit my car

kill all the deer, they might give my kids lyme disease

kill all the coyote, they might kill my cat

Robin Hood -- I totally agree with what you say about that certain type of "city people" and I wish we COULD send them back to the city but unfortunatly those who come to the country and demand everything to be just as it was where they came from are like fleas or other pesky critters -- you can't get rid of them.

I came from the city but I brought with me the love ,respect and concern about animals with me. I bought a home in an already built up area - I did not buy any land and destroy the habitat and refuge of the wildlife here.

The people who would kill off our wildlife because of their idiotic "fears" have never cared for anyone but themselves and unfortunately never will.

If I could, I'd load those type of people onto a huge bus and send them back where they came from !

As you said, animals were created by God for a reason - and the reason is NOT for us to do with them as we may - we are to live in harmony with them and I want that to happen - NOW!

It may alrady be too late however :-(

What's up with all the liberal tree huggers posting comments on this story? They say man is infringing on wild animal's territories. Well, then where is man's territory? Aren't humans animals and have a right to expand into whatever territory they need to survive? Liberal tree huggers, please think before you post!
05/17/08 @ 15:21

We can't take territory from animals? Why not? Who cares if they are pushed away from civilization? There's millions of unsettled acres of wilderness for these animals to use and no harm will come to them if they relocate. We need to drill in ANWAR and also reduce the demand for oil to reduce the cost of gas and diesel, and the cost of all goods that are transported to markets by petrochemical burning vehicles.

A Hunter

I suggest you rent the movie 'Never Cry Wolf"

it is a true story about a scientist who is hired to prove that wolves are killing all the Caribou and ruining hunting

what he finds is the truth

man is killing all the caribou, wolves survive mostly on mice, chipmunks, small prey

Big Oil

we get most of our oil from Canada, oil prices are high because GW and Enron conspired to take regulation off the futures traders, it is called the Enron Loophole, look it up in your search engine

you will not see it in the news even here, big brother had got a hold on this like nothing I've seen

it is the Bush family that has huge business ties with the middle east that keeps fueling the propaganda over OPEC and Saudi Arabia

dilling in Anwar will not make any difference in our supply or price

it will go on the open market

it will make Bush family and friends richer and destroy one of the last places on this planet that man shows no trace,,it would be nice to have one

this next bit is taken from george carlin

currently this planet is overpopulated with humans that think the invisible man in the sky made all of this especially for them

and the invisible man has 10 things that he doesn;t want you to do

and if you do any of them he will send to this place of torture and maiming and screaming and pain

but...... he loves you

he loves you and he needs money

all knowing all powerful.......just can't handle money ;)

I hate hunting. Hunters have distorted minds that make them think they can do whatever they want with God's creatures. They try to use the Bible to condone what they do by saying that God gave us "dominion" over all the creatures on the earth. Well, of course they distort God's Words because what He meant was THAT HE GAVE US DOMINION TO CARE FOR THEM THE WAY HE CARES FOR THEM. You fools. Did you ever wonder why the word "kind" is in "Mankind"? I wonder everyday. GOD LOVES ALL HIS CREATURES AND HE RESPECTS ALL HIS CREATURES AND HE EXPECTS MAN TO DO THE SAME. I hope all hunters get shot by another hunter or shoot themselves. THEY DESERVE IT. Yes, that's how passionate I am about this.

Leaving aside discussions of hunters, oil barons, NY transportees, and liberal tree-huggers, I believe that the world is a delicate balance. Every time we (or a calamity, such as a flood or comet) has messed with that balance, there have been serious consequences. Humans imported non-native animals and plants which have no natural predators, precipitating the extinction of the Dodo bird the island of Mauritius, the choking of the canals in Florida by water hyacinths, the overpopulation of nutria and European Starlings, and, your favorite and mine, the African Killer Bees. If we, in addition, remove the existing predators, we are upsetting the balance twice.

Enough reasoned argument. Warning, now comes the sarcastic stuff!

I suggest we re-establish the Connecticut packs of grey wolves. We can have a big kick-off ceremony at the "Wolf's Den" in Mashamoquet State Park, where the last wolf in Connecticut was supposedly killed. This park was once the domain of the Mohegan chief Uncas. I'll bet the Mohegans could tell you how great it is to keep being moved out of your land because there are plenty of other places you can go. (Sorry, I just couldn't help myself.)

This reestablished wolf pack could keep the deer population under control. True, we'd lose a few cats and small dogs, and the occasional toddler, but nobody would shoot deer or demonstrate against hunting.

Florida considered importing hippos to take care of the water hyacinths. They eat a lot of vegetation, but what goes IN must come OUT, and the pollution generated by killing the water hyacinths with herbicides is probably less nasty. Also, hippos kill quite a few people on their home turf.

Am I a conservative tree-hugger? I don't hug, I just bow courteously, pat affectionately, and pass respectfully.

A week and a half ago, I was driving to work on route 188 in middlebury and a cat of some sort lept across the street in front of me. I had just taken a left onto 188 out of Chritian street when this happened. He came from the left where there are houses and brush, went in front of me, ran across the street, and then ran into the cornfield on the right side of the street. He was brownish-gray, or taupe in color, small ears (or I would say I didn't notice any large pointed cat ears), and I did not notice any large tail. I thought that maybe I had seen a moutain liom at first, but then realized it would have been more of a golden color and had a long tail. After looking up "cats" on the computer, I finaly found one that looked like what I saw. It looked so much like the bobcat you took pictures of in cheshire. I wish I had my camera with me to prove it! If anyone has seen a bobcat in the area, please respond. It's hard to convince anyone that you have seen anything unusual if they haven't seen it themselves. Thanks.
