Working towards HD

Posted by Jeff Bailey, Executive Producer on September 2nd, 2010 at 04:20:46 pm, 95 views

It's been a couple of months since I initially wrote about the work going on behind the scenes at News 8 as we revamp our engineering department for our eventual switch to HD. I don't go back into the engineering area that often, and I have to say I was surprised by all the work that's gone on over the summer.

'Lost' and found

Posted by Jeff Bailey, Executive Producer on May 21st, 2010 at 03:39:19 pm, 3056 views

This probably not a good thing to admit -- but I'm lost on "Lost". We posted a Lost quiz on our web site a couple of weeks ago and I only got about half-way through when I realized I haven't been paying enough attention to the show to get more than half of the questions correct.

Unless you've been stuck in an island-hopping time warp recently, you probably know that the story of Oceanic Flight 815 will end on Sunday, May 23rd. How it ends is known only to a select few. The speculation and rumormongering has been so intense that the website "Lostpedia" has locked down their site to comments "due to extensive spoiler vandalism...."

That hasn't keep Twitter folks from speculating with the hastag #LOSTfinale. One that caight my eye this morning was from ABC's JakeTapper who Tweeted "Turns out it all took place in Suzanne's Pleshette's snowglobe".

ABC is planning a big "Lost weekend" with the original episode on Saturday night, a series recap show early Sunday evening followed by the two and a half hour long finale. With the score I got on the test I should probably watch all of it before the last Lost.

Hmm, have I used the word lost enough yet.

Anyway, a little bit ago I saw this promo for a special Jimmy Kimmel Live "Aloha to Lost" in which the creators of the show will unveil three alternate endings to the series. Here's the promo:

I'm hoping this is a gag, but if not I reply - why?! I don't like these alternate ending gimmicks. If you're going to end a show end it, and then burn the other versions you didn't pick. Why annoy some fans by showing an ending that *gasp* may be better than the one you selected. You may think it's cool to show people what you could have done, but I think it's a waste of time.

Anyway, hope you enjoy the series finale. We'll look forward to your comments.

*Blog Alternate Ending*

And if you can't get enough of Lost when it's over, Jimmy Kimmel Live has a really cool special after the finale. It's called "Aloha to Lost" and one of the things I really love is that the creators of the show will present three alternate endings. So not only do you get to see the official ending, you get to check out other equally cool endings. And hey, because of the way Lost bounces around in time, all of them could be real.

Anyway, hope you enjoy the series finale. We'll look forward to your comments.

A look back at the old 8

Posted by Jeff Bailey, Executive Producer on April 23rd, 2010 at 02:29:19 pm, 6254 views

Over the decades we have been on the air in Connecticut, WTNH (and WNHC) have had a number of different logos. For instance this one below is a bumper sticker from the late 1980's when Action News 8 was "Everywhere".

Action News Everywhere

Yeah, we used that slogan way before 'they' did. This one is hanging in the news director's office. Anyway, as we transition to another look, I spent a few minutes hunting around the building and found a few other examples of the good old 8.

We've received plenty of e-mails and Facebook messages asking us when we're making the switch to our new look. Very soon, folks.

And one part of the rollout you'll see on the streets now. Our news vehicles are getting decked out in the new motif. Here's a look.

Several staffers have been working for weeks on getting everything ready, from the on-air and website graphics to the little things like business cards and office stationary stationery. As for the day when everything changes -- it's coming next week.

New Look for News Channel 8

Posted by Paul Spingola, Director, Promotion & New Media on March 7th, 2010 at 10:10:58 pm, 4643 views

If you were watching the Academy Awards on News Channel 8, you probably saw a revealing new promo announcing a logo change "Coming Soon". Yes, after 14 years, the News Channel 8 logo will exit stage left around the end of April. So why the change? Did the News Channel 8 logo do something wrong? Not at all. The News Channel 8 logo has served us well, but just as the world has changed significantly over the last decade, so too has the way people consume their news.

No longer is local news only watched on tv. Digital products including mobile and online now often serve as either the primary or complementary choice for accessing news and information. In fact, a survey released March 1st by the Pew Research Center uncovered these two fascinating facts: 1) The internet has surpassed newspapers and radio in popularity as a news platform on a typical day and now ranks just behind TV, 2) 33% of cell phone owners now access news on their cell phones.

If that's the case, then the "Channel" element in the News Channel 8 logo no longer effectively represents everything we stand for. Over the past decade, WTNH has been a leader in bringing you the best local news coverage online at wtnh.com and more recently on the go to your mobile device. We’re now even on Twitter and Facebook, as well on your computer desktop through our new iPulse “widget”.

So, now is the time for a new logo that more clearly identifies our news, showcases the best places you can access our coverage, and represents our commitment to the bold, hard-hitting, "no bull" news coverage that you'll get no matter where you are.

We hope you like it as much as we do.
