This excuse is getting old.
You guys can no more predict the weather accurately than I can throw a baseball at 110 MPH.

How many times has this happened in the last few months?

What's the point of even watching anymore?

I agree...I am driving to work in the snow hearing it wasn't going to begin until this afternoon. So many rely on the forecast and when it is so off, it is dangerous for all concerned.

So I take it you're a meteroligist with years of experience attemtping to predict weather in CT? Or are you more of an "accu-weather-window" person? Sorry for being a little harsh, but in CT we deal with it. If you're new to the area, then sit back, strap in, and get ready for a wild ride with the weather. If you've lived here your whole life, you should be used to this by now, and be ready for unexpected things to happen weather wise here.

Ct weather does not lend itself to predictability; however, this winters forecasting has been kind of grim.

I have no suggestion to remedy my gripe.

Maybe a magic 8-ball for all CT forecasters.

Apparently being a meterologist means being good at making stuff up. If it was just supposed to snow in the morning hours then why has the sky opened up and started dumping snow here in Southington??? We have about 2 inches (on top of the "1-3" from earlier) Give it a rest and just admit that you guys have NO clue what the weather will be next in CT..seriously...

You all are being overly harsh, if you lived in New England all your lives you'll know the old saying: you don't like the weather then wait 5mins and it will change, I remember as a kid one part of my yard was sunny and the other half was pouring rain, and it stayed like that the entire storm! the give us an Idea what the weather will be, but with weather like New England's how can you really predict the unpreditable??? if you don't like it MOVE!!!

Gee Eric and all you Perfects..
why don't you go to school to become a meteorologist and dazzle us all with your "perfect predicting" skills. It takes a lot brain work... Computers can only do so much. They don't generate the actual weather. Just as in real life, things change. maybe with any luck, you will too-- your negativity that is.
Dr Mel is a pleasant guy and has been thru a lot. He obviously loves his work and it keeps him going-- as does a POSITIVE attitude..We need more happy people in the world,,,not the nay-sayers who bring us down.

The point has become to drive people to the website not weather predictions. Like Washington the weather people have made me cynical. It's all about business, what will get our attentions. So what's the big deal? Should we care? If you can keep people anxious then we can keep the drugs flowing and ad revenues happen (just one of many possibilities).

At my office people were talking about this on Monday. So, WTNH must of gotten a lot of hits on their website. Personally I believe they will talk about the hits at the upper levels of WTNH more than the missed opportunity to keep people informed. As of right now they still predict 7 -12 inches.

What a surprise this morning. Normal commute from Seymour to Shelton took me almost an hour! Passed 4 or 5 accidents along the way. It was slippery too. Not letting up in Shelton either. Hope the ride home isn't as bad as they are predicting. Kids are getting out early - probably should have just stayed home.

Was surprised that it started so early and so heavily. Normal 45 min in from Seymour to New Haven took 2 1/2 hrs because everyone getting off the main hwys onto the country roads like Rt243 with their AWD and 4WD's thinking they can go fast in icy conditions.

Thanks Dr. Mel. Proof that if you wait 5 minutes here in Southern New England the weather will change. So everyone who complains about prediction of weather, stop because it's not an exact science even with all the knowledge freaky things happen.

Oh and this is to all the drivers who are addicted to their cell phones. In weather like this? TURN THEM OFF! I saw WAY too many people spinning up RT243 in New Haven one handed and the cell glued to their ears. HELLO? Can we say, accident waiting to happen!?

I think it's so very funny that people are complaining about the forcast. It's Winter. Be prepared!!! Deal with it! Don't blame the weather forcasters because it took you longer to get to work. Thanks for the explanation. It's amazing how accurate our weather reports are now, so much of the time. Weather prediction modeling has come a long way and saves a lot of lives, prevents injuries, etc. Yes, you guys get it wrong sometimes, but it's a rapidly developing science and with every storm you learn from, it allows more people to be safe in the future. I am encouraged to hear you say there's a lot to learn, rather than just shirking responsibility. No one's perfect, and if science didn't keep moving forward in the face of so many mistakes, the greatest developments of our civilization would not have been made!

OK, so since when does living in CT mean we don't get snow people? Here's the thing. WTNH gets it right about 90% of the time in my book, which is much better than most. No disrespect meant here, but Dr. Mel has been a weatherman in CT for longer than I've been alive, and that's 34 years. Give the man some credit.

That being said. It's CT, it's winter. Carry a set of boots in the car or truck if possible. Remember a gentleman by the name of Mark Twain? He had a little saying, "One of the brightest gems in the New England weather is the dazzling uncertainty of it."

New England weather is an experience. Anyone could tell you it's going to be warm and sunny in Florida, but it takes guts and brains to predict weather in New England. It's one of the best about New England.

Just my humble opinion.

THE TRI-STATE WIMPS!

Well it is official today…the Tr-State area has won the contest in the USA, of not only having the wimpiest winters…but having the people who make the biggest federal case out of a lousy few inches of snow. Stop complain you wimps! I lived in places like St. Paul, MN and Maine where we would get 18-inch snowstorms with wind chills to -40 F below zero… and we would not complain and wine they you wimps down here do. 1 lousy inch in New Haven is all I saw! 1 –inch! It melted by 1:00 Pm (the sun is even breaking out).

The people of New York City, New Jersey, and Connecticut are the biggest babies in the world. Try a winter in the Intermountain West, Upper Midwest/Great Lakes, or New England. The hype made out of a few flurries in the Tri-State area is truly a joke to someone who has lived in a “real winter climate”.

Next up this week…hype 25 F…while it’s -25 below zero in the Upper Midwest.

The storm over NC and Virginia was NOT suppose to come up the close. Just look at the radar and you will see snow heading for Southern Ct. The radar doesn't lie.
01/30/10 @ 12:34
Comment from: Brian [Visitor]
Jon, If u notice, the radar return reflect a more west to east motion. Leading edge is not hitting the ground due to dewpoint being below zero. So other than perhaps a couple flakes this is a mid Atlantic snowstorm. Hate to miss out on it but this storm has been modeled correctly the past couple days. I don't see much for the rest of the winter. Could be wrong, but it looks like an average season in terms of cold and snowfall totals

John is not an idiot. He should have said even though we are still missing the snowstorm the snow shield came further north than expected

I was able to obtain the final snowfall talies for the Mid Atlantic States.

This was a pretty impressive storm for areas who only average 7-14 inches of snow a year vs our 25 inches on the coast to 45 inches well inland.

Baltimore 5.5 inches of Snow
Washington DC - 6.4 inches of snow
Atlantic City 7.9 inches of snow
Roanoke 9.0
Cape May Nj 9.5
Frankfort Del 10.0

I know just before the storm Accuweather was saying that Washington DC was only to get bushed by a few inches , not 6.4 inches of snow . A major storm even for coastal Ct let alone Washington DC

Sometimes people need to read between the lines.John seems to be a snowlover and was hoping to get the snow. This shows that weather forecasting is an inexact science and clearly demonstrates what weather forecasters mean when they state that the storm bears watching. This was still a close call especially if you lived on Long Island where a slushy inch or 2 may have occured if the storm moved closer.Even the unexpected 2-3 inches on Thursday prove we still have much to learn.

Well my warm weather reined…the official count down to the end of meteorological is now official under way. In 27 days the final month of meteorological winter 2009/2010 will be history. January featured a normal month temperature wise across the three Tri-State stations (NYC, Bridgeport, Bradley), although Bradley was a bit above normal (+1.8 F). Bridgeport received 7.7 inches of snowfall…while Bradley received 14.5 inches…close to normal for the month.

El Nino looks to hold it’ground through February…so more storm tracks to the south of us our toward the Great Lakes. There is a fleeting chance of a dusting Tuesday night (abut 20%) and that’s it the next 10 days…or so it looks, NO SNOW. Of course each day the solar angle is increasing…buy late in the month, even if snow manages to fall… it will have a hard time staying on the ground. The bare ground in the Tri-State area will only help to warm ground temperatures even quicker. You can see how much stronger the sun has become in the last week or two. It will only get stronger.

For the winter fan…December 1st must seem like yesterday.

Hey there, Si!

You're correct, we are now in the final month, which means we will probably also have a lot of testy winter lovers on our hands. You know how they can get when the curtain is falling on their precious white crap season! LOL!!!!!! Speaking of testy winter lovers, I'll bet they were seeing red the other night, huh? I was watching that radar, and that monster storm was just off shore. Bet they were not too happy! LOL!!!!

Oh, well. Keep that weather quiet, Si! I do not want to come back to any slop on the ground! Chat soon.

Shoreliner,

We really can't complain about winter in the Tri-State area this winter...we really had only one "snowstorm" way back on December 19/20th. Other than that its just be waves of cold and bouts of warmth. NWS at Hartford finsished above normal and NWS Bridgeport was only 1 F below normal.

I think the rest of Feb will feature dry weather and little snow. In fact they are saying a warm -up to near 50 F by late next week. You can just see the shadows getting darker every day as the sun mounts higher and higher (yea!).

The end is near for the winter fan (lol).

Hey, Matt, I was just checking out 'Glacier Gil's' forecast. Gotta love the way he put 'six more weeks of winter', and 'big storm just offshore this weekend' in big, bold letters. Do you think that he's just a tad biased?

Oh, well, at least the end is near for winter. Which means the winter lovers will be getting all defensive on here, saying things like 'we can still get one!' or 'we've gotten them as late as april!', etc. Like I said before, at least die hard winter fans who refuse to let winter die are good for a laugh.

I good sign winter is winding down (and we haven't had much snow) - is when they keep trying to tell us something "big" is coming at the end of the eight day forecast (lol).

How can Geoff make the statement yesterday at 5:00 that he rec'd an email for Gill stating that there were no storms thru 02/15/2010 of any significants! Yet today at noon, Dr. Mel, all giddy, tells us that over the next 8 days, 3 storms a brewing! Par for the course!

That' why when I'm home, I CANNOT bear to watch Dr. Mel in the winter! That smile & giddy demeanor he has during the winter is enough to make you want to puke!

Just wait until the warm weather returns, you'll see what I mean. The smile he has now will surely fade away...........

I was personally offended by several remarks made regarding Dr. Mel. He is a pleasant man and most likely receives his information via satellite, etc. This man has experienced major health issues and we are luckly to have him. I had a friend who never made it past the first year with the same disease. I wish these people would leave him alone. With his diagnosis he puts on a happy face, hopefully because he feels better and will remain in a healthy state. The fools who criticized him can go jump off a bridge in the ice and snow. He should remain on the job. Patty

I have to agree that both Dr. Mel and Gil Simmons love the nasty weather. I almost can't bear to hear them report it. In the morning, it could be the clearest forecast for the day and Gil will find some bad weather cloud say somewhere over Asia and say: "It could be heading our way... we'll keep our eye on it."

Urghh..... please

Snow on the East Coast south of Massachusetts is not really a big deal most often. Every five or six years… the Tri-State area and the East Coast may get a winter with a lot of snow or a big snowstorm (for us), but it’s the exception not the rule. Also, unlike places up in the Midwest, Great Lakes, or Northern New England….the East Coast is far sunnier - so snow in the Tri-State area never sticks around long. Look at the fuss about the snow in the Dc area…but people up in the Great Lakes or Maine forget 6 inches is a ton of snow for a city at that latitude.

I think the combination of latitude and low elevation keeps winters on the mild side in the East Coast. We are lucky.

What is so humorous is that we always seem to go down this path on the East Coast in winter. I Know snow fans are angry…but who is to blame?

Back in mid November… when Accuweather and the Weather Channel were hungry for market share, they tried to once again hype the coming winter in the USA. I warned that numericaly sunch things were a long shot. Forget the fact that people in places like the Great Lakes or Intermountain West need no headline to know winter is coming - worse, they once again attempted to hype winter in the Atlantic lowlands and big cities in the I-95 corrder…a location of relatively infrequent snowfall and only moderately cold winters. Anyone who even has a cursory knowledge of United States regional climatology knows that heavy snow and snowstorms along the Atlantic coastal plain are infrequent from Rhode Island southward. The so-called “I-95 corridor”…. from Virginia Rhode Island…annually receives only 15 to 35 inches of snow. Yet each year, hungry for market share (or at the direction of winter fans who control the message) – a foolish attempt to fight regional climatology is made. Then there is dismay when the weather doesn’t live up to the massive hype/spin.

When you consider seasonal snowfall data over the last 30, 60, or 148 years (at Central Park, NY which averages 22.5 inches of snow)……how common can blockbuster snowstorms be in the Tri-State area/East Coast? Then one must consider the insult to folks who live in “real winter” climates. Folks who live in places like the intermountain West, the northern Plains/Midwest, Great Lakes, and northern New England….. laugh when they see the hype surrounding 4-inches of snow in Baltimore or New Haven. Did they ever consider what the farmer who has just come in from experiencing wind-chills of 55F below zero in northern Minnesota thinks …when he hears that folks in the I-95 corridor are “braving” wind chills of 20 F?

When you consider the regional climatology of the Atlantic States and look at long-term data…those hyped up computer generated long rang predictions… and the people who try to spin them… are always doomed to fail. Math always wins.

Well it's now obvious the big snow will miss the Tri-State area. Poor Gil and Mel. Seems they just can't catch a break. The sad thing is that in a week or two, the sun really starts geeting stronger, so any snow that even falls will not last long.

The door is closing on another whipy Tri-State winter.

I see Melsy's already hyping up Wednesday storm, saying how the state could have a foot or more. He really did not have the smile on his face when I saw him, though. Could it be that as of now, the NWS does not see it that way? If they did, they would have a winter storm watch in effect.

Mel, move out to the midwest if you love it so much. You'll have all you want & more. When you do move, take the cold & snow we do get with you.

My bad, guess I jumped the gun! Oh, well, I'll still believe it when I see it. They always hype up these crap storms & it always blows up in their faces.

The only downside to that is that people will stop listening & heading warnings, and then they'll be a lot of people in trouble if and when the big one hits.

To All The People Complaining About Weather Forecasts:

I suppose that all of the people complaining about weather forecasts are meteorologists with years of knowledge regarding the Weather right?

Oh wait, no, you aren't, you're just a bunch of normal guys who know squat about meteorology that are sitting on your couches getting your panties in a bunch over the fact that we can't predict the weather 100%.

New England weather is hard to predict and even the best can get thrown off. Relax and grow a pair.

I think we have had a fairly easy winter on the East Coast when all things are considered.

We had only one “snow-storm” way back on December 19th in the Tri-State area. Other than that it’s been sunshine and average temps. Yes I know snow is a pain. Even if it snows on Wed, we are near mid Feb, the sun will melt the snow so quick form here on out.

Let’s not complain, we have it easy in the Tri-State area most winters, and this one has been no exception.

It just makes me laugh when we try to predict a system so complex as weather with any type of accuracy. There are too many variables in the equation. At best its a roll of the dice. It is in the interest of the station to hype these types of stories to

This was a relatively small storm and the prediction was for our tiny state and they still got it wrong.
Think about that the next time some scientist starts talking about Climate Change and Global Warming and all the melting icebergs. A CT native said it long before, a sucker is born every minute.
NOT ONE OF THEM HAS A CLUE, NOR IS IT POSSIBLE FOR THEM TO PREDICT WHAT THE WHOLE PLANET'S CLIMATE WILL DO 10 MINUTES IN THE FUTURE...LET ALONE 10 YEARS!

Food for thought.

Throw out your dopplers, your computers, your models out the window. I have no confidence in large or small weather predictions from any forecaster in CT. Year after year, the big ones and the little ones are the ones that make us make bad decisions--like taking a day off from work when it was not needed; or getting stranded when your gut tells you--you should get out of here. Heeding meteorblabbers will get you.....where?

I prefer other methods of getting my weather report, but there is one constant no matter where you go for your weather.

YOU CAN NOT ACCURATELY PREDICT THE WEATHER!

You can't blame WTNH, The Weather Channel, CBS, ABC ... whatever.

There are just too many variables, and we do not have technology today to take this to the next step.

Case closed.
