SURPRISE!!!
It wasn't a lot of snow, just 1-3 inches, but the squalls which were expected for the afternoon came during the morning rush hour. Temperatures were cold enough for icing to take place, and later today, temperatures will really take a tumble. Icy roads are to be expected. Tonight, wind chills will be between 0 to 10 below.
So what happened?
A rip-roaring jet stream came directly overhead with its highest winds in a relatively small pocket. The snow didn't move in from the west. Instead, it developed overhead as those strong winds provided the lift which squeezed out whatever moisture that was present.
The most advanced machines missed this. We may think we have all the answers, but today's weather shows us that there is much more to learn. It also shows us that in the winter even a couple inches of snow can mean a lot.

You guys can no more predict the weather accurately than I can throw a baseball at 110 MPH.
How many times has this happened in the last few months?
What's the point of even watching anymore?
I was up at 5 and Matt told me it would be later so I did not wear my boots- mistake- oh well
You are the best!
I have no suggestion to remedy my gripe.
Maybe a magic 8-ball for all CT forecasters.
why don't you go to school to become a meteorologist and dazzle us all with your "perfect predicting" skills. It takes a lot brain work... Computers can only do so much. They don't generate the actual weather. Just as in real life, things change. maybe with any luck, you will too-- your negativity that is.
Dr Mel is a pleasant guy and has been thru a lot. He obviously loves his work and it keeps him going-- as does a POSITIVE attitude..We need more happy people in the world,,,not the nay-sayers who bring us down.
At my office people were talking about this on Monday. So, WTNH must of gotten a lot of hits on their website. Personally I believe they will talk about the hits at the upper levels of WTNH more than the missed opportunity to keep people informed. As of right now they still predict 7 -12 inches.
Thanks Dr. Mel. Proof that if you wait 5 minutes here in Southern New England the weather will change. So everyone who complains about prediction of weather, stop because it's not an exact science even with all the knowledge freaky things happen.
Oh and this is to all the drivers who are addicted to their cell phones. In weather like this? TURN THEM OFF! I saw WAY too many people spinning up RT243 in New Haven one handed and the cell glued to their ears. HELLO? Can we say, accident waiting to happen!?
That being said. It's CT, it's winter. Carry a set of boots in the car or truck if possible. Remember a gentleman by the name of Mark Twain? He had a little saying, "One of the brightest gems in the New England weather is the dazzling uncertainty of it."
New England weather is an experience. Anyone could tell you it's going to be warm and sunny in Florida, but it takes guts and brains to predict weather in New England. It's one of the best about New England.
Just my humble opinion.
Go figure...........there was never any rain all day, nor the night before???
Well it is official today…the Tr-State area has won the contest in the USA, of not only having the wimpiest winters…but having the people who make the biggest federal case out of a lousy few inches of snow. Stop complain you wimps! I lived in places like St. Paul, MN and Maine where we would get 18-inch snowstorms with wind chills to -40 F below zero… and we would not complain and wine they you wimps down here do. 1 lousy inch in New Haven is all I saw! 1 –inch! It melted by 1:00 Pm (the sun is even breaking out).
The people of New York City, New Jersey, and Connecticut are the biggest babies in the world. Try a winter in the Intermountain West, Upper Midwest/Great Lakes, or New England. The hype made out of a few flurries in the Tri-State area is truly a joke to someone who has lived in a “real winter climate”.
Next up this week…hype 25 F…while it’s -25 below zero in the Upper Midwest.
Give us a break and tell us during all weather forecasts that you have no clue what you or the rest of the crack Channel 8 weather team are doing.
I know Mel wasn't reporting this AM, so my aggrivation isn't directed towards HIM- - BUT, you go onto WTNH.COM and it say's "Click radar and watch the Storm Move across CT!!!!" Okay, all very well and good (and boring) but where was kicky little doo-dad at 6:30 this morning when it was all "flurries"?? Cuz someone needed to be watching it!!
UGGGGH!!
But, I guess you have nothing else to read online now that the Vikings and Brett Farve choked against the Saints...
DR MEL YOUR TIME IS OVERDUE SORRY OLD MAN. IT'S TIME TO HANG UP THAT WEATHER JACKET AND RETIRE. I TOTALLY AGREE W THE COMMENTS MUST BE NICE TO FAIL AND STILL STAY EMPLOYED. TELL ME THE SECRET TO IT ALL. BRING ON THE SNOW LOVE IT!!!!
Liveing in the moment make one that way.
Don`t think of what you will say ,the spirit will speak thru you.
Same with the weather, don`t fret, rain sleet snow ,wind or shine, like day, twilight or dead of night, something will happen.Keep watching!Don`t look back.

You are totally right! Not only that but what babies people are who can't handle a dusting of snow (wow a whole 2 inches). The people up in the northern Great Lakes would laugh at calling today a "snowstorm". I guess that's why they call people on the East Coast ....winter wimps!
~Peace Glenna~
of flurry that last 6 hours. If I built a house as accuate as your weather forecast it would be loop-sided

Storm came much closer than was forecast. They had snow not reaching D.C. on AccuWeather. It is snowing hard in New Jersey. Again, the Old Timers always said, "Winter never rots in the sky". We Shall See
John is not an idiot. He should have said even though we are still missing the snowstorm the snow shield came further north than expected
I was able to obtain the final snowfall talies for the Mid Atlantic States.
This was a pretty impressive storm for areas who only average 7-14 inches of snow a year vs our 25 inches on the coast to 45 inches well inland.
Baltimore 5.5 inches of Snow
Washington DC - 6.4 inches of snow
Atlantic City 7.9 inches of snow
Roanoke 9.0
Cape May Nj 9.5
Frankfort Del 10.0
I know just before the storm Accuweather was saying that Washington DC was only to get bushed by a few inches , not 6.4 inches of snow . A major storm even for coastal Ct let alone Washington DC
Sometimes people need to read between the lines.John seems to be a snowlover and was hoping to get the snow. This shows that weather forecasting is an inexact science and clearly demonstrates what weather forecasters mean when they state that the storm bears watching. This was still a close call especially if you lived on Long Island where a slushy inch or 2 may have occured if the storm moved closer.Even the unexpected 2-3 inches on Thursday prove we still have much to learn.
Well my warm weather reined…the official count down to the end of meteorological is now official under way. In 27 days the final month of meteorological winter 2009/2010 will be history. January featured a normal month temperature wise across the three Tri-State stations (NYC, Bridgeport, Bradley), although Bradley was a bit above normal (+1.8 F). Bridgeport received 7.7 inches of snowfall…while Bradley received 14.5 inches…close to normal for the month.
El Nino looks to hold it’ground through February…so more storm tracks to the south of us our toward the Great Lakes. There is a fleeting chance of a dusting Tuesday night (abut 20%) and that’s it the next 10 days…or so it looks, NO SNOW. Of course each day the solar angle is increasing…buy late in the month, even if snow manages to fall… it will have a hard time staying on the ground. The bare ground in the Tri-State area will only help to warm ground temperatures even quicker. You can see how much stronger the sun has become in the last week or two. It will only get stronger.
For the winter fan…December 1st must seem like yesterday.
You're correct, we are now in the final month, which means we will probably also have a lot of testy winter lovers on our hands. You know how they can get when the curtain is falling on their precious white crap season! LOL!!!!!! Speaking of testy winter lovers, I'll bet they were seeing red the other night, huh? I was watching that radar, and that monster storm was just off shore. Bet they were not too happy! LOL!!!!
Oh, well. Keep that weather quiet, Si! I do not want to come back to any slop on the ground! Chat soon.
We really can't complain about winter in the Tri-State area this winter...we really had only one "snowstorm" way back on December 19/20th. Other than that its just be waves of cold and bouts of warmth. NWS at Hartford finsished above normal and NWS Bridgeport was only 1 F below normal.
I think the rest of Feb will feature dry weather and little snow. In fact they are saying a warm -up to near 50 F by late next week. You can just see the shadows getting darker every day as the sun mounts higher and higher (yea!).
The end is near for the winter fan (lol).
Oh, well, at least the end is near for winter. Which means the winter lovers will be getting all defensive on here, saying things like 'we can still get one!' or 'we've gotten them as late as april!', etc. Like I said before, at least die hard winter fans who refuse to let winter die are good for a laugh.
The fat lady may not be singing, but she is starting to hum...
Just wait until the warm weather returns, you'll see what I mean. The smile he has now will surely fade away...........
It is the only job in the world where you can make six figures, make mistakes all the time and be totally wrong!!
And also get paid for it (pretty darn well to, I must say and never get fired for screwing up). Talk about job Security.
Urghh..... please
I think the combination of latitude and low elevation keeps winters on the mild side in the East Coast. We are lucky.
It so much fun swirling down from the heavens. Can you blame them.

I LOVE Dr Mel!
Back in mid November… when Accuweather and the Weather Channel were hungry for market share, they tried to once again hype the coming winter in the USA. I warned that numericaly sunch things were a long shot. Forget the fact that people in places like the Great Lakes or Intermountain West need no headline to know winter is coming - worse, they once again attempted to hype winter in the Atlantic lowlands and big cities in the I-95 corrder…a location of relatively infrequent snowfall and only moderately cold winters. Anyone who even has a cursory knowledge of United States regional climatology knows that heavy snow and snowstorms along the Atlantic coastal plain are infrequent from Rhode Island southward. The so-called “I-95 corridor”…. from Virginia Rhode Island…annually receives only 15 to 35 inches of snow. Yet each year, hungry for market share (or at the direction of winter fans who control the message) – a foolish attempt to fight regional climatology is made. Then there is dismay when the weather doesn’t live up to the massive hype/spin.
When you consider seasonal snowfall data over the last 30, 60, or 148 years (at Central Park, NY which averages 22.5 inches of snow)……how common can blockbuster snowstorms be in the Tri-State area/East Coast? Then one must consider the insult to folks who live in “real winter” climates. Folks who live in places like the intermountain West, the northern Plains/Midwest, Great Lakes, and northern New England….. laugh when they see the hype surrounding 4-inches of snow in Baltimore or New Haven. Did they ever consider what the farmer who has just come in from experiencing wind-chills of 55F below zero in northern Minnesota thinks …when he hears that folks in the I-95 corridor are “braving” wind chills of 20 F?
When you consider the regional climatology of the Atlantic States and look at long-term data…those hyped up computer generated long rang predictions… and the people who try to spin them… are always doomed to fail. Math always wins.
The door is closing on another whipy Tri-State winter.
Mel, move out to the midwest if you love it so much. You'll have all you want & more. When you do move, take the cold & snow we do get with you.
The only downside to that is that people will stop listening & heading warnings, and then they'll be a lot of people in trouble if and when the big one hits.
I suppose that all of the people complaining about weather forecasts are meteorologists with years of knowledge regarding the Weather right?
Oh wait, no, you aren't, you're just a bunch of normal guys who know squat about meteorology that are sitting on your couches getting your panties in a bunch over the fact that we can't predict the weather 100%.
New England weather is hard to predict and even the best can get thrown off. Relax and grow a pair.
We had only one “snow-storm” way back on December 19th in the Tri-State area. Other than that it’s been sunshine and average temps. Yes I know snow is a pain. Even if it snows on Wed, we are near mid Feb, the sun will melt the snow so quick form here on out.
Let’s not complain, we have it easy in the Tri-State area most winters, and this one has been no exception.
you guys hiring
This was a relatively small storm and the prediction was for our tiny state and they still got it wrong.
Think about that the next time some scientist starts talking about Climate Change and Global Warming and all the melting icebergs. A CT native said it long before, a sucker is born every minute.
NOT ONE OF THEM HAS A CLUE, NOR IS IT POSSIBLE FOR THEM TO PREDICT WHAT THE WHOLE PLANET'S CLIMATE WILL DO 10 MINUTES IN THE FUTURE...LET ALONE 10 YEARS!
Food for thought.
YOU CAN NOT ACCURATELY PREDICT THE WEATHER!
You can't blame WTNH, The Weather Channel, CBS, ABC ... whatever.
There are just too many variables, and we do not have technology today to take this to the next step.
Case closed.
