The Storm Watch Is On

Posted by Dr. Mel on September 2nd, 2010 at 08:48:18 am, 9454 views

Here we go. The most powerful storm on the face of the earth is about to make a very close pass to our region. It has been a long time since we last had a hurricane, and it is so easy to forget how fickle these storms can be...

Our cool April will begin to moderate today, and we should see 70-degrees. It is time for our weather to change. But we can't be surprised if the weather takes another cool turn....April is like that

Climates: Made To Change

Posted by Dr. Mel on March 30th, 2009 at 02:52:00 pm, 5641 views

A lot of people ask me if I think that carbon emissions are responsible for the recent warming of the global atmosphere. I wouldn't be surprised, but the problem is very complex. No easy answers, and even more difficult solutions. I am sure you have some strong opinions.

April....Don't Be Cruel

Posted by Dr. Mel on March 25th, 2009 at 01:31:17 pm, 1598 views

T.S. Eliot described April as the cruelest month....Well, March is winding down, and even if it doesn't go out as a completely silent lamb, the weather is definitely turning around. Yes, there have been snowstorms in April, and we had an April Fool storm or two in the recent past but there's no doubt that the weather is turning the corner.

Will Spring Egg Us ON?

Posted by Dr. Mel on March 17th, 2009 at 02:11:18 pm, 2412 views

Officially, spring arrives at 7:44 am EDT Friday. Off the weather deck, the point of sunrise vanishes behind a stretch of land that extends southward, only to reemerge during the first day of fall. It is a my little Stonehenge. That is when we experience nearly equal hours of sunlight and darkness. But the big question is whether winter is truly over. Is there a chance for one or two more rounds of winter snow?

A Quiet Spell In March?

Posted by Dr. Mel on March 12th, 2009 at 11:39:18 am, 3170 views

A quiet spell may happen, but you never can be too sure this time of year. Today is the anniversary of one of the biggest snowstorms to have ever hit Connecticut and the Northeast. The storm started on March 12th.....It was relatively mild, and rain was falling, but then, colder air swept southward as the storm moved just east of Long Island. For three days, the blizzard raged. When it was over, 50 inches of snow fall in Middletown, and 48 inches in New Haven - if you could find a level surface. This all unfolded in March 1888.

And The Roar Goes On

Posted by Dr. Mel on March 9th, 2009 at 01:51:53 pm, 1982 views

After a weekend of springtime bliss, today, in parts of New England, it is another early spring blitz. Here we go again. Just last week, some parts of Connecticut picked up 11 inches of snow. Then, came the weekend with its 60-degree plus temperatures, and this morning we had awakened to a springtime chill which changed the cold rain to a mix of wet snow and sleet. The return to cold will be with us through the week, an it should be reinforced with the passage of another cold front on Wednesday. In the spring, weather watchers can't miss a minute. By the way, on the last blog about "springing forward,''for Daylight Saving Time, the reponse was pretty strong.

Spring Forward This Weekend

Posted by Dr. Mel on March 5th, 2009 at 01:46:21 pm, 3140 views

Legend has it that Ben Franklin was the individual who came up with the idea of Daylight Saving Time. While in Paris, he wrote a paper which detailed the energy savings possible if Parisians set their clocks ahead. The idea was that Parisians aren't fond of being early to rise, so that all the candle power used during the morning just goes to waste because everyone sleeps through it. Why not keep it dark through the morning, and save the light for late in the day when people are up and around?
