The Storm Watch Is On

Posted by Dr. Mel on September 2nd, 2010 at 08:48:18 am, 9483 views

Here we go. The most powerful storm on the face of the earth is about to make a very close pass to our region. It has been a long time since we last had a hurricane, and it is so easy to forget how fickle these storms can be...

Putting Myself in "Jeopardy"

Posted by Geoff Fox on June 20th, 2006 at 10:46:31 pm, 888 views

Every evening at 7:24 PM we go on-the-air during Jeopardy, with a live news brief. The content varies from night-to-night, but weather gets 10-15 seconds for a little update.

Tonight, with strong thunderstorms around, I asked for the entire brief to use as a weather update.

Can Moms Forgive?

Posted by Dr. Mel on May 8th, 2006 at 11:26:38 am, 405 views

I know that this is not the season for snowstorms or hurricanes - two of the great forecast challenges in Connecticut, but it is the time for outdoor activities, and in the spring, the weather marches to its own drummer. It is a tough time of year for forecasting. Thanks to the lingering chill in the Atlantic, fronts have a way of checking in, but not checking out.

Here's the problem: The ocean heats up more slowly than the land areas, mainly because of mixing and wave action. So, in the spring, over the ocean, the air is cooler and more dense, and stubborn high pressure systems form. As fronts sail eastward toward us, they run into this Atlantic wall, and they put on their brakes, right along the coast. Clouds linger, showers are never too far away, and the computers can hardly ever get it right. The weather can even begin to move backward, and that totally baffles the machines which always look smartest when the weather moves steadily from the west to east. Even in the late 1940s when computer forecasts first began, they looked very impressive when the flow was steady from the west, but throw in some road block on the east coast, and the genius fades, along with the sunshine.

That's the alibi....now what? For the moment, it looks like the end of the week is in trouble. One of those blocking patterns wants to set up just in time for one of the truly great weekends of the year - Mother's Day weekend. Actually this pattern is not uncommon through early June, including Memorial Day Weekend. Sure, we have had a dry spring, except for some occasional bursts of rain, but the timing this week leaves more than a little to be desired. Our Storm Team 8 weather staff will be watching this evolve through the week, and I am sure there will be updates. So, stay tuned.

But, I just have to keep saying, weather people are in prediction, not production, and we have mothers, too. But wouldn't mom be proud if we could really do something about it? Mom, I'll keep trying.

We Got Decked

Posted by Dr. Mel on April 19th, 2006 at 08:55:08 am, 1003 views

When the warm season arrives, the pace may slow a bit, but the weather keeps rolling along. I was on the weather deck early last evening. The breeze was picking up over the water, and then suddenly, the wind increased to 30 to 40 mph, white caps covered the sound, and dark clouds rolled across the eastern sky. The chairs on the deck were picked up and blown across to the railings. We were decked. And all of that was occurring on a day that had every appearance of being peaceful, sunny and unsually mild for mid-April. The weather always keeps us on our toes. Even when the weather is quiet, it can become too much so.

Are you ready to spring forward on Sunday? It was Benjamin Franklin who first had the idea of Daylight Saving Time.

It Wasn't As Warm As You Think

Posted by Geoff Fox on March 27th, 2006 at 06:15:12 pm, 845 views

This is one of those strange times when science and reality seem to diverge.

How warm was it Monday? 70s? Warmer? Actually, most of the state barely made it to 60!

I caught a link on the Drudgereport last night: US Northeast due for major hurricane: AccuWeather... .

Holy cow! Actually, I used saltier language. That's pretty provocative stuff.

Surviving the Real Storm

Posted by Dr. Mel on March 17th, 2006 at 08:21:22 am, 1149 views

I have wanted to do this for a very long time. A day doesn't pass without me receiving an e-mail or a phone call from someone diagnosed with multiple myeloma, or cancer, in general. Often, people are looking for some guidance, or they are just curious how my own battle is going. So, about a year ago, I thought the best way to let everybody in on my own progress and hopefully provide a light for those who are facing their greatest challenge in life was to begin a website. And so, with the help of WTNH webmaster Jeff Bailey, the website is ready to go. You can connect at: www.drmelmyeloma.com.

Spring Song

Posted by Dr. Mel on March 6th, 2006 at 10:26:08 am, 3185 views

I never thought that I would be so happy to see spring arrive. I know, officially, the vernal equinox does not occur until 1:26 PM on March 20, and winter does have a way of delivering the late surprise, but for weather record purposes, March 1 marked the first day of spring. The weathermaps are saying, too, that winter is melting down before our very eyes. I guess I am so happy to see winter fade because this has been one of my most difficult seasons to forecast..
