A Big Day Coming Up

Posted by Dr. Mel on September 19th, 2008 at 02:14:45 pm, 1182 views

While battling an incurable form of cancer during the last 12 years, I somehow managed to enjoy the most productive years of my life. Every single bone in my back has been broken or damaged, and I have shrunk about 7-8 inches. But during these years I have written two major books, and a third is in the making. I started a scholorship for meteorology majors at Westconn. I have started an endowed fun at Yale for multiple myeloma. Over $300,000. is in this endowment. Last year, I received a special award from the Emmy people for 25 years of service and performance - The Silver Circle Award. But on Saturday I receve something real special-The Connecticut Magazine Hall of Fame Award.

SLOSHING TOWARD TEXAS

Posted by Dr. Mel on September 12th, 2008 at 02:20:50 pm, 1494 views

Hurricane Ike promises to make a punishing splash during its landfall. The National Weather Service uses a computer model called SLOSH to project the height of storm surges. SLOSH stands for "sea, lake, overland surges," and the variables which go into the computer model are pressure, storm size, forward speed, track and winds. All the factors are there to make for a huge surge which will be well over 10 feet....maybe 15 to 20 feet.

Many Thanks

Over the years, I have received a number of honors and awards, but the absolute most gratifying award came this month from the editors and readers of Connecticut Magazine. For the ninth consecutive year, I was voted the best weatherperson in Connecticut, and I was inducted into the magazine's Hall of Fame. Usually, I am in the Hall of Blame, but this honor tops all the others. Thanks.
