The Storm Watch Is On

Posted by Dr. Mel on September 2nd, 2010 at 08:48:18 am, 9477 views

Here we go. The most powerful storm on the face of the earth is about to make a very close pass to our region. It has been a long time since we last had a hurricane, and it is so easy to forget how fickle these storms can be...

A Happy Day

Posted by Dr. Mel on October 22nd, 2008 at 03:05:19 pm, 2201 views

We don't like to talk much about our birthdays - it is too immodest, but it was 12 years ago on Oct. 23 that Arlene though she could perk me up for my birthday and had a profession masseuse try to untie my severe back pain. I thought I was going to die. Now, I am sure a good massage is just what many people could use, but one week later, I learned that I had bone marrow cancer, or multiple myeloma - an incurable form of cancer, and I could be gone from this earth in as little as two years.

But here I am - another birthday and 12 years later. This Saturday night, I will be joining many cancer survivors at the Light The Night Walk in New Haven, rain or shine. This is sponsored by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. For all of us who deal with cancer in our lives, this continues to be a hopeful time.

Everyone Talks About It......But

Posted by Dr. Mel on October 16th, 2008 at 02:15:15 pm, 2384 views

Was it Mark Twain or his friend Charles Warner who said, "Everyone talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it?" In any case, the same can be said about the stock market these days. There are a lot of experts, but nobody really knows which way the wind is blowing. The weather seems easier to predict than the stock market. Meteorologists don't have to deal with the human element - or maybe they do in terms of global warming. So, predicting the weather, especially long range forecasting, could be as precarious as predicting stocks. Yet, this is the time of year when people want to know about the prospects for the coming winter. I always give it try.

655 degrees

Posted by Jeff Bailey, Executive Producer on October 8th, 2008 at 11:17:03 am, 1384 views

OK, we've had our share of hot days and summer-like conditions in October over the decades, but trust me it's not going to be THIS hot.

655

Yeah, we had a bit of a typo on the 8-day graphic on the web this morning. Partly sunny yes, but it won't be 655 degrees on Tuesday. We've made a new graphic and it should process through soon. Thanks to everyone who sent me an e-mail.

Snow Lover? Here's Your Chance!

Posted by Dr. Mel on October 7th, 2008 at 02:04:18 pm, 2666 views

Now, I am sure that there is no reason for a relationship between who wins the presidential election in November and the type of winter that follows, but statistics can demonstrate just about anything and everything. Here is something you probably haven't give much thought to, and for good reason: statistics imply that your choice for president could have something to do with the nature of winter which follows.

Stormy Weather Specifics

Posted by Gil on September 25th, 2008 at 06:09:08 am, 3458 views

Hello:!:

We are looking at some active weather on the way!

Here are some early specifics. Heavy rain overnight tonight and for much of Friday. The Friday Morning commute could feature heavy rain and wind with street flooding. Check in with Good Morning Connecticut on WTNH/MyTv9 for updates between 5AM and 8AM Friday.

We are looking at a month's worth of rain over the next 36 hours 88|. Heavy rain overnight through much of Friday. The rain will not be steady all day Saturday, but showers can still be expected! Clearing should work in for Sunday.

Wind will be another issue. I expect gusty conditions to develop late today and windy tonight - Friday. We could see some gusts approach 40 MPH especially at the immediate shoreline. Boaters should double check their vessels along the shoreline!

We are also watching the tropical weather scene as well! CLICK HERE FOR TROPICAL WEATHER INFORMATION.

Please post your weather report below. I may read your report on Good Morning Connecticut Friday Morning! If you have a Twitter account, message us @GMCT. Thank you in advance! -Gil

It's Back, For Now!!!

Posted by Dr. Mel on September 23rd, 2008 at 02:45:55 pm, 2039 views

For awhile, we began to wonder. For the longest time, sunspots, relatively cooler areas on the sun seemed to be absent. Nobody is sure exactly how sunspots and their cycles influence weather, but some 400 years ago, there was this Maunder Minimum when sunspots were hard to find, and it was a period which coincided with the "little Ice Age." Snow fell early and lasted long. Harbors were frozen from the mid-Atlantic northward, and economic hardship followed. Europe had a similar experience. People were speculating that maybe were were going back to that period.

You Can Look It Up!

Posted by Dr. Mel on September 22nd, 2008 at 02:00:19 pm, 849 views

I don't know if you'll find it in your dictionary, but the word, equinoctial, has been used since Emerison and Thoreau to describe powerful storms which develop around the time of the equinox. Today, the autumnal equinox arrived at 11:44 am, and right on cue we have something to watch.
