Greatest game in college basketball history?

Posted by Erik Dobratz, Sports Producer on March 13th, 2009 at 07:57:31 am, 1260 views

If you stayed up and watched the six overtime thriller between the Huskies and Syracuse at the Big East Tournament last night you witnessed some serious history.

Several people were emailing and texting me after the game asking me if I thought this was the greatest game in college basketball history. What do you think?

In the 25 years I've been watching college basketball, I've never seen a better game. The loss will bother Jim Calhoun for a few days but I'm sure he'll grow to appreciate it one of these days.

Someone also emailed me yesterday and asked me if it was worth even sending Noah Finz to the tournament. I think that question is pretty easy to answer.

Noah will have all the reaction tonight and I'm sure he'll have some great stories to tell from the locker room.

And by the way.....yes, I did write here yesterday afternoon that I thought UConn would win this tournament and let me just say I don't mind being wrong after this outcome.

Down Goes Pitt!

Posted by Erik Dobratz, Sports Producer on March 12th, 2009 at 09:10:27 pm, 914 views

So much for the potential third round brawl between Pittsburgh and UConn.
The Panthers get caught perhaps looking ahead and lose to West Virginia 74 to 60.

Co-Big East Player of the year DeJuan Blair got into foul trouble and the Mountaineers took advantage.

Huskies coming up next.

They will win this tournament now that Pittsburgh is out.

Did you know it was Squash Day in Connecticut? The members of the Trinity Bantams 2009 National Champion Squash Team had a meet and greet/photo op with Gov. Jodi Rell Thursday. The team won its 11th title in a row last month. That's definitely worthy of a gubernatorial proclamation:

Big East Quarterfinals Today

Posted by Erik Dobratz, Sports Producer on March 12th, 2009 at 07:57:14 am, 847 views

Quick, if I asked you when was the last time the UConn men's basketball team won a game at the Big East Tournament would you be able to answer.

As Noah and I reviewed the Huskies last few tournaments last night, we couldn't believe that it was March of 2005.
A quarterfinals loss to West Virginia last year and quarterfinal losses to Syracuse in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
UConn beat Georgetown in opening round action of the 2005 tournament.

Who do the Huskies get tonight in quarterfinal action? SYRACUSE!

This UConn team has too much talent to lose this year but then again anything can and usually does happen in Gotham.

Noah will begin his reports from the Garden tonight at 6 and he'll hang around town for as long as the Huskies allow him.

I have a funny feeling the Huskies may win a couple games in New York this week including a potential Friday night match with Pittsburgh.

Enjoy the games, the Madness is about to really get going.

UConn women warning!

Posted by Erik Dobratz, Sports Producer on March 5th, 2009 at 08:09:13 pm, 2766 views

It's that time of year again......The UConn women start Big East Tournament play this weekend. The Huskies play Sunday at 2pm and if you want to watch the game, go buy a ticket.

The first two rounds of the tournament will be on ESPN U. We've received quite a few calls about this already so I figured why not get it out there now so our phones won't ring off the hook Sunday afternoon.

Simply put ESPN paid for the rights to these games and they decided to put the games on ESPN U to try and pressure cable companies to get the network on more sets.

I do have a solution....You can still see all the hi-lites just watch News Channel Eight Sunday, Monday and Tuesday night.

Enjoy the games.

Coach Calhoun is a bargain for ct taxpayers

Posted by Erik Dobratz, Sports Producer on February 23rd, 2009 at 09:32:15 pm, 3200 views

Over the last couple of days the exchange between UConn's Jim Calhoun and a member of the media has been played over and over.

I personally think the story is a bit overblown and as a matter of fact I don't even really think it is a story. Coach Calhoun not only deserves every penny but if you read the story below from the New York Times....we are getting Coach Calhoun on the cheap!

Don't ask the coach about his salary!

Posted by Chris Velardi on February 22nd, 2009 at 10:18:24 am, 2982 views

Did you see what happened when someone asked UConn Men's Basketball Coach Jim Calhoun about his salary? Take a look:

It looks like Calhoun - one of the state's highest-paid employees - thought the question was a joke at first. But the reporter kept pressing. And Calhoun got fired up.
