From best ever...to biggest let down

Game 7.
That alone brings all the excitement in the world to any series, in any sport. But this Game 7 was different. Four of the six games before it needed extra time to be decided. The sixth, needed 3 overtimes alone. The series pitted a young, exciting team with a rookie coach and the rookie of the year against the veteran, injury depleted, defending champions.
And that's not all.
To say the series had gotten chippy, might be the understatement of the year. Knocked out teeth, players throwing other players into the scorer's table, you name it, they've done it. So it all came down to this. Game 7. Win or go home. It's on!
And then, it went on.
The most hyped Game 7 in a long time ended in a ten point win for the defending champion Boston Celtics. The Bulls came out firing early, even got a nice lead. But then, Boston came back. Hit a few threes and by the half, they had a comfortable lead that they never gave up.
Be honest...even if you were rooting for the Celtics, it was a let down. Has there ever been a series that had so much excitement and drama that ended which such a yawn? Ever?

WPLR Changes

Posted by Erik Dobratz, Sports Producer on April 21st, 2009 at 09:17:52 pm, 5605 views

I normally don't write about events that don't revolve around sports but when I read tonight that Pam Landry was let go over at WPLR it really annoyed me.

I never met Pam Landry but I listened to her for years and she was not only a good listen but seemed like a really nice person.

I'm pretty sure she's a Mets fan but nobody's perfect.

Sunday in St. Louis

Posted by John Pierson on April 5th, 2009 at 01:02:15 pm, 3607 views

Lots of Cardinals in this city.
The baseball ones and the basketball ones.
The St. Louis Cardinals are getting ready for opening day.
The Louisville Cardinals and Stanford Cardinal, they're getting ready for Final 4 basketball.
Of course, the Stanford Cardinal play UConn tonight at 9:30pm. The Huskies game follows Louisville's game with Oklahoma.

The late start leaves plenty of free time.
Geno Auriemma and his Huksies had an early afternoon shoot around.
The Husky head coach is not a big fan of the late game, to much idle time.

Speaking of idle time, I spent the morning running around the city, literally.
Took a walk to the Arch-- boy that thing is impressive. Great museum and gift shop underground.
If UConn wins tonight-- photographer Tim Wright and I will be making a trip to the top of it tomorrow. You can look for that Monday on News Channel 8 at 5pm.
I also stuck my foot(shoe on)in the mighty Mississippi River.
It's amazing to see it with your own eyes-- the current is unbelievably strong but I must say the water is pretty gross.
Ran by the new baseball stadium, which is the site of this years All-Star game. Auriemma has a view of the field from his hotel room, I only got to look through the bars in centerfield- it has that new stadium old park feel. My jog also took me by the Bowling Hall of Fame. Who knew?

I do plan on working tonight too. We will see you at 6pm.
The Huskies will answer Carol's question from our blog. And we will talk about the UConn/Stanford match up. It's a game I think UConn will win by 12.

Play Ball!

Posted by John Pierson on April 4th, 2009 at 09:24:46 am, 1265 views

Alright baseball fans! The season starts Sunday.
Which of the local teams is going to have a better season?
I'm going with Boston.
I'm not a Red Sox fan either, I just think they made the best off-season moves. Nothing major. Filled their needs.

So let the great debate begin.
Yankees.. Red Sox.. Mets?

Is this it for Calhoun?

Posted by John Pierson on April 4th, 2009 at 09:14:27 am, 1774 views

Can't help wondering if Jim Calhoun will be coaching his final game/games this week. The Hall of Fame coach has done it all in his career. A serious run at another National Championship seems to be the perfect exit to a decorated coaching career.

Or is it?

Maya Moore or Diana Taurasi?

Maya or Diana?
It's a question I have to ask. It's a question that has been driving me crazy.
Both are great players with personalities to match, very different personalities I might add.
But if you could pick just one of them to start a UConn team with who would it be?
Diana or Maya?

Questions anybody?
We're making our March to the Arch in St. Louis for the Women's Final Four.
We want to take some of your questions for the UConn team with us. Put 'em on the blog. If we like them I'll use them in the locker room and put them on the air. (I'm sure I will like all of the questions). Complete coverage from St. Louis starts Saturday on News Channel 8 and MYTV9.
