He's like the poster boy for an athlete who just can't make up his mind. Brett Favre has once again unretired and will play for the Minnesota Vikings. Remember how it turned out last time Jets fans?!

The details are posted on WTNH.com

You won't have to wait long to see the purple #4 in green and gold country. The Vikings are scheduled to play in Green Bay Nov. 1st.

Eli, and Vick, and the NFL

Michael Vick
Michael Vick speaks at a news conference after signing a one year, $1.6 million deal with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Football Friday here in the newsroom. The Philadelphia Eagles have officially signed Michael Vick to a one year contract, as a possible backup to Donovan McNabb or a receiver. "I'm excited about the opportunity," he said at a Friday morning news conference. He says it's the perfect situation right now, and he can learn from Donovan. I dunno -- Is he worth the grief? Can't wait to hear Geoff Fox's take on this.

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning signed his six-year contract extension that will pay him an average $15 million a year -- highest in the NFL. If you're Peyton do you curse or congratulate your little brother?

Jets open their preseason tonight against the Rams. Put a red cross on their helmets -- Five starters won't play because of injuries.

I didn't watch the game, but the stories I read say Tom Brady played well on that repaired leg against the Eagles.

Hartford sort of has a pro football team. The New York Sentinels of the UFL will play a home game at Rentschler Field. They'll play the Florida Tuskers Nov. 12th.

Quote from my next desk neighbor (and Giants fan) Rebecca: "Preseason means nothing... boring... stupid". So I guess it's OK for the Giants to go 0-4 in preseason eh?

Farewell to a friend

"No goodbye, you know I don't like goodbyes. See you later."
-Mike Archibald, John Q

Today the Sports Department says goodbye to a member of our team.

For the past four years, UConn Women's Basketball team member Tahirah Williams, was part of our team here at Channel 8. Today, she left for North Carolina and the next part of her life.

Tahirah, or T, became part of our team kind of de facto. When she was a freshman, John Pierson needed someone to run a "behind the scenes" camera as part of our Final Four coverage, something that has been tradition since the 1999-2000 season. Right away, John recognized she had the personality needed to do the job. And she did. For all four years of her UConn career; a record.

Something about that amateur video journalist job must've caught on...Three years later, the summer going into her senior year, she became an official Sports Team 8 intern. She was thinking about a career in Television.

Love in the Workplace?

Posted by Scott McGowan, Sports Producer on July 19th, 2009 at 09:26:49 pm, 2019 views

Is it allowed? Can it be done?
And even if the first two answers are yes...Is it a good idea?

Take it easy. I'm not talking about the cute new girl in the Sales Dept. or the scruffy, yet handsome, guy in Tech Support. This is about sports.

Team chemistry. "Being a professional." Putting personal feelings aside to be successful. Just sports terms for your regular break room hook up.

The topic came to my attention in the oddest of all places...Major League Soccer. The MLS certainly isn't one of the big four professional sports in America, but despite that, we get to watch the ultimate office romance gone wrong.

Every parent's worst nightmare

Posted by Scott McGowan, Sports Producer on June 7th, 2009 at 07:59:41 pm, 7656 views

Parental Warning: DO NOT--I repeat--DO NOT let your children see this.

It's not what you think. Believe me, I don't want to see Kobe Bryant win a championship either. Actually, I originally wanted to write about what a bad message that would send. Be selfish, cheat on your wife and children, be a bad teammate, still win a title. The NBA: Where Doomsday happens.

But this isn't about Kobe, even though I think he's not a good example for your kids to follow. This about something much more near and dear to the hearts of kids everywhere.

Candy.

Dancing with the ... Huskies???

Posted by Jeff Bailey, Executive Producer on May 22nd, 2009 at 04:28:26 pm, 3563 views

So what do you do when there's a loooong rain delay in your Big East baseball playoff game? If you're the UConn Huskies and USF, you put down the bats and do the Macarena and the Limbo, add in a little Michael Jackson and James Brown, and don't forget the Irish step dance.

Thank you BigEast.TV for the clip.

MLB and the steroid era: All strikes...No balls

Posted by Scott McGowan, Sports Producer on May 15th, 2009 at 06:20:08 pm, 3021 views

The situation:
Today Manny Ramirez reportedly met with his Dodger teammates to apologize for his 50 game suspension.
He was suspended, of course, for testing positive for banned substance. Just the latest name on an ever increasing list of players who have tested positive for steroids--and an even longer list of players who have been linked in one way or another to steroids.
So Manny said sorry to his team. Big deal. He, like every other player who has taken a banned substance, is a cheater.

The request:
But here's my request. In a game supposedly full of men, can someone act like one? I want one player, to stand up and say "I did it. I cheated." But I want them to do it...before they get caught. Before they are embarrassed and shamed into it. Before their agents and PR people can come up with a prepared statement as to why they did it and how they still aren't sure what they were doing or if it was wrong. America was founded by men who stood up and took responsibility for their lives. Shouldn't the men of America's pastime do the same?

An Easy Read?

Posted by John Pierson on May 3rd, 2009 at 11:09:43 pm, 2006 views

I will not judge Alex Rodriguez. It's to easy.
If the the new biography on the Yankee superstar is true- I actually feel bad for A-Rod.
Selena Roberts spent 6 months working on her book due out Monday.
It appears to be less than flattering but it may shed new light on some of A-Rod's questionable decisions.
In the book author Roberts claims A-Rod likely used steroids in high school and may have taken human growth hormones while with the Yankees- not sure if that's a big surprise.

To me- the most intriguing part of the book-- how the fatherless affect may have damaged Rodriguez. Roberts portrays A-Rod as an insecure man, a product of his dad's decision to separate from the family when Alex was 10.
Some people can overcome, others are not so fortunate. Until you walk in someone's shoes it is unfair to pass judgment.
Roberts, from the sound of it, feels for Rodriguez, "I think like any child, you never want to be abandoned again. In order to sort of keep people near him, people close, please people, I think he always felt that he had to be better than good."
