The Secret
Posted by Erik Dobratz, Sports Producer on March 25th, 2007 at 08:33:48 pm, 506 viewsI believe it was the winter of 1987 and my father agreed to finally take me to the Hartford Civic Center to see my favorite college basketball team.
It was the beginning of the Jim Calhoun era at UConn. We arrived at the arena about 25 minutes before the game. Believe it or not we walked up to the ticket window and got two tickets right behind the basket near the UConn bench (can't do that these days).
I watched intently as the coach hollered at his players and the fans oohed and aahed as his team pounded the opposition.
Sometimes it feels just like yesterday that I was sitting in the stands watching that game. To watch my team dominate an opponent and feel on top of the world.
Yesterday felt alot like today.
My Hoyas are going to the Final Four.
Yep, this UConn grad, born in Connecticut, working at a Connecticut television station is a Georgetown fan.
That's a tough secret to keep in this neck of the woods.

Just Say No
Other than being 7 foot 3, there is no reason why an NBA team should be interested in drafting UConn player Hasheem Thabeet.
Apparently Thabeet's been exploring leaving school after one year in college to play professionally. His decision is expected soon.
Can't blame him for wanting to cash in on his size. No, I blame the NBA for watering down what used to be a good product.

UConn gains Scholarships, Kids Lose a Year
Sometimes coaches have to convince kids to stick it out, to stay at the school they committed to attend. I don't think that's the case with Jim Calhoun and the one, maybe two players who are leaving UConn to play elsewhere.

Wake Up! The UConn Game is on.
Posted by Erik Dobratz, Sports Producer on March 20th, 2007 at 10:43:50 pm, 1746 viewsTip off for tonight's UConn Women's second round NCAA Tournament game was just before 10pm.
We know that attendance is way down at the Civic Center but what about the rest of us watching on television. Are you staying up late to watch your favorite women's team?
Lots of debate in our newsroom about this story, what do you think?

Bracket on Fire!
Posted by Erik Dobratz, Sports Producer on March 18th, 2007 at 10:43:21 pm, 473 viewsSo I decided to build a fire at my home this evening. I'm gathering up some old newspaper to get it going and
I quickly realize I don't have enough to keep the flames roaring. After burning last weeks Times, I grab the next best thing. My NCAA Tournament Bracket printout.
You can try a system, strategy or any logarithm and there is no real method to the march madness.
At this stage of the tournament I'm in the middle of the pack of my pool. I have one thing going for me and another thing going against me.
In my favor; my team is still in (Georgetown).
Not in my favor; the weatherman is in first place (Geoff Fox).
The latter really hurts.

Time for Central to start focusing on the Buckeyes
While the fans continue to sight see, gamble, and enjoy the food in and around the NCAA basketball tournament site in Lexington, Kentucky, the CCSU Blue Devils, along with my photographer Keith Porter and I, began concentrating on Central's game tonight with Ohio State. Things got off to a brisk start yesterday morning.

More than just the game!
Posted by Erik Dobratz, Sports Producer on March 13th, 2007 at 08:37:20 pm, 489 viewsIf you're a fan of the Central CT Blue Devils you had to love the behind scenes look at the team flying to Lexington, Kentucky today.
Marc Robbins and Chief Photographer Keith Porter were the only local television crew on board the blue devils charter flight. Marc and Keith will be with the team again all day tomorrow.
Look for Marc's reports Wednesday night at 6 as well as in our NCAA tournament special Wednesday night at 8. He will also be live from Lexington Thursday night just prior to tip off.

Pick a Winner!
It's that time of year again!
March Madness is upon us.
Time to fill out your NCAA brackets.
The beauty of the bracket-- everyone has a chance.
Who cares if you don't know the differnce between Central's Blue Devils and the ones from Duke. Not sure where the Belmont Bruins are from-- big deal! (Nashville, TN. I had to look it up.)
Pick your favorite team, your favorite color, your favorite mascot. Be advised, there are 5 schools in the tourney that go by the nickname Wildcats.
Who will make the Final Four? Who will win the national championship?
When you're done-- tell us who you like and why.
Happy Picking!
