The classic NBA rivalry returns
Although it's not exactly a done deal just yet, the Celtics and Lakers will likely be locking heads once again for another NBA championship beginning next week. Their conference final opponents, Orlando and Phoenix respectively, don't seem to have the firepower to get past these two legendary franchises.

Follow the Leader
One of the greatest things about being at a game is the crowd. The crowd provides some of the best parts of the game, and if you are surrounded by a group of like-minded fans the game is all the more enjoyable. For those of you watching last night's Cavaliers-Celtics game, you probably noticed the always loud Boston crowd was especially vocal and united in their opinions. But what if I told you the crowd was taking cues from a fellow Boston fan, 3000 miles away, in Los Angeles?
ESPN columnist Bill Simmons decided to play a social experiment for Game 6. He created a Twitter account called CelticsChants, promoted it in his ESPN.com column, and asked fans attending the game to become followers and start his chants at the game. Not only did it work, it also drew attention from commentators, the media, and rival teams. The most noticeable chant was late in the game. As LeBron James shot free throws, Simmons suggested the chant "New York Knicks", an allusion to James' impending free agency this summer.
Now others are jumping on board. A Laker's fan has started a similar movement, and I am sure it is only a matter of time before every team has a Twitter account. I am curious to see if it catches on, or if it is a passing fad. Either way, I like it. It gives the home crowd something to get behind, and makes the game as a whole more enjoyable.
What about you? Is this a case of technology enhancing the sports experience, or distracting from it?

Big game, big cliches
So, there's a super-sized football game being played on Sunday that will fill airtime between some very expensive commercials. There will be several people 'up in arms' over every touchdown and field goal you see (They're called referees and judges). And you're likely to hear many lame sports cliches as the game goes on.

Not who I expected
If you ever want to put money on a sports bet, just ask me who I think will win and then wager the opposite way. I'm a great contrarian indicator. Take for instance the NFL playoffs.

The McGwire asterisk*
"I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!" You know that ironic line from the movie 'Casablanca', where Captain Renault feigns outrage while seconds later pocketing his gambling winnings. I had that same thought yesterday -- I'm shocked, shocked to hear that Mark McGwire used steroids.

Most entertaining game of the weekend
A few days ago I wrote the following about the Packers/Cardinals NFL wild card playoff game: "Don't care either way. ZZZZzzzzzz...."
Wow, was I wrong!

Deja vu times three in NFL playoffs
Does it strike you as unique/odd/downright weird that the first round of the NFL playoffs this coming weekend will look similar to the final week of the regular season?
