Is it the Apocalypse?
I awoke this morning, and I had to make sure there wasn't fire and brimstone hailing down from the sky. I've been following sports my entire life, and I have never seen what I have seen this week. Red Sox fans openly rooting for the New York Yankees.
You see, the Red Sox once assured spot in the postseason suddenly isn't so assured. The Tampa Bay Rays have caught fire, including owning the Red Sox over the past few weeks, and find themselves 2 games back in the Wild Card race. And the Red Sox are even finding that beating the last place Orioles isn't a guarantee. Red Sox Nation has been holding its collective breath with each game that passes, and confidence in the team is dropping by the day.
Enter the Yankees. Heading into the final week of the season, the Yankees and Rays have 7 head-to-head games remaining, and the Yankees can essentially lock-up a postseason birth for their rivals by taking care of the Rays.
But if the Rays are able to keep winning, and the Red Sox can't right the ship, Sox fans could find themselves watching October baseball from home for the second straight season.
