Here come the TCU Horned Frogs
Make room for the Horned Frogs. They're making the jump to the Big East. On Monday, Texas Christian University will accept an invitation to join the conference in all sports.
Money is of course the biggest player in the move. TCU doesn't seem like a perfect fit for a conference called the Big East, but like anything there are positives and negatives.
The biggest impact will come in football. The move makes sense for both the Big East and TCU. The school joins a conference that earns an automatic bid to a BCS Bowl game. TCU will be leaving the Mountain West Conference, which doesn't receive an automatic bid. The Big East is getting one of the top college football programs in the country—if the Horned Frogs joined today they would be the best team in the Big East—they're ranked #3 in the country.
If they are still playing that kind of football in 2012-2013, when they eventually join the league, it will have an impact across the league when TCU plays conference games on the road. The addition of TCU will give the conference nine football playing members. The Big East is hoping Villanova comes along eventually too, rounding the conference out to 10.
Basketball gets another member to an already jammed packed league. TCU gives the conference 17 teams playing basketball in the Big East. The Horned Frogs win this one—top to bottom -- the Big East is the most powerful basketball playing conference in the country.
Location is not ideal. Costs to get teams in and out of the Dallas area will increase the travel budget for schools. That could eventually have an affect on some of the less glamorous sports. On the flip side, the location gets the Big East into new recruiting territory, it also expands TCU's exposure throughout the East.
No doubt it seems a little weird but in the long run I think it's a good move for both.
