NIT or not for UConn
Yeah, that was a pretty ugly game the UConn men played Tuesday in the Big East tournament against St. Johns. I can understand the frustration of head coach Jim Calhoun not wanting to immediately say the Huskies would accept a bid to play in the original college basketball tournament, the NIT.
It was just a few months ago, November in fact, that the Huskies were in the finals of the NIT Season Tip-Off tournament, finishing second to Duke. I say do it again, coach. Help your team shrug off the mistakes of the last few games, find the brilliance they showed at times during the season and get back to the finals of the NIT.
Your fans will be behind you all the way.

My cousin went to UCONN Camp as an 8th-grader and really learned a lot, then his idiot HS coaches had him and other AAU players play "their way" -- the result being every week their varsity team with 6'3"++ front line was defeated constantly by scores like 40-24. If they took high-percentage shot instead of mindlessly passing the ball, they got benched (should have 30-second clock in high school).
Lot of good players turned off by such coaches and didn't bother with hassle of school teams... just played rec leagues.
UCONN's coaches should be FORCED to treat CT high schools as their "minor league" and towns should require their coaches to attend UCONN coaching clinics.
AND... UCONN's 12 basketball scholarships... 10 should be required to go to CT high school students, and the other two could be used for out of state or to get a Sudanese tower.
If GENO or JIM can't win with the talented players from our 169 towns, then they are not good COACHES (anybody can recruit nationwide and have good records... that is just "managing" a team...) all I see is that GENO and JIM are managers... and I'd like to see them COACH and the beneficiaries should be our home-grown talent, after all, it is the UNIVERSITY of CONNECTICUT!!!!!!!
All these negative comments are ridiculous and come from fair weather fans with no knowledge of hte situation or season. The team quit on Calhoun, not hte other way around. Dyson was a cancer and has been a cancer since his freshman year. An ex player once told me that Dyson would do his own thing out on the court and not run the offense. He is a black hole, a ball hog and not at eam player at all. He only cared about his personal stats and trying to get his draft stock up. UConn is talented but there is no reason for Calhoun to accept an NIT bid if the team is not going to play as a team. The best thing to do is decline the bid and save face for the team, university, and state of CT. Also who ever said the team GPA is not above 1.0 is grossly mistaken.
If he can not get the team to play get rid of him. Get some that CAN motivate the loser. Everybody right he's in it for the money and that's it........
Is anyone really sure the team wants to play anymore? The starters didn't seem to really want to be on the floor the last few games. Why embarrass themselves if they really don't have the heart. We know they have the talent, beating high ranked teams, but then playing down to teams they should have had no problem with, and too often losing. Calhoun isn't to blame, he doesn't play on the floor, the guys are to blame for lackluster effort. NO NIT in my opinion.
UCONN thinks it's too big big of a team too be involved in a 2nd rate tournament?
LOSERS
I'm glad they are going to the NIT. Next season starts today.
I thought Kemba Walker, for one, played better in the last few games of the season. Sit the seniors, play the underclass men. Let them get some tournament experience they can use next year when its their team.
The short version -- be nice and be respectful of other's opinions, even if they don't agree with yours, or your comment may be deleted.
