Not necessarily the news
A bit of premature celebration by the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper Monday. The paper ran an ad congratulating the team for winning back-to-back World Series Championships. That would be on the same day the sports page reported that the Yankees took a three games to one lead in the series.
According to the AP, "the three-quarter-page Macy's ad is on the back of the front section and features a T-shirt with the Phillies logo, the commissioner's trophy and the phrase 'Back To Back World Series Champions.'"
The publishing error prompted this from Howard Griffin, the paper's national advertising VP:
"A Macy's advertisement in today's Inquirer incorrectly offered Phillies 2009 World Championship merchandise. The Inquirer deeply regrets this error. Macy's is a great corporate citizen, supporter of this region and our sports teams. We apologize for this error and any inconvenience this caused."

I have a bit of a hopeful note for Phillies fans. Remember the 1979 World Series between the Orioles and Pirates. The Birds were leading the Series 3-2 needing to win only ONE game in their HOME park to clinch the title. ONE GAME! AT HOME!, and they couldn't do it. The Pirates won the last two games in Baltimore. It CAN happen. Being an Orioles' fan, I, of course, was devastated, but I took SOME solace in the fact that the winning run in Game 7 was knocked in on, I think it was a homer, by Willie Stargell, and, even though he wasn't an Oriole, it was very hard not to like Willie. He was a class act.
How about every Macys manager personally apologising to every Yankees fan that comes into their store? Maybe giving them a 5% discount on purchases too???????? They could even give Phillies fans the same apology and discount for jinxing the Phillies. How about it Macys?
