Hey, I was going to say Hurricane Gloria too! I vividly remember Geoff Fox urging people to stay inside when the eye passed over. I don't know why that is forever emblazoned in my memory but it is.

I hope I won't have to remember your ignoring Dennis Kucinich introducing 35 articles of impeachment against George W. Bush this evening. He's live on C-SPAN right now. I hope you'll at least find time to mention it. I had my kids watch history being made. I hope their friends will be able to be informed about it from "NEWS" Channel 8.

Kirk: What's the deal with Captain Solomon "C" Whiskers? I sort of remember seeing him introducing cartoons a few decades back. Any details available on him?

My BEST memory is watching Connecticut Bandstand.

Question: During your broadcast of the 1948 election .... did Mark Davis pick Truman or Dewey to win?

jeff: Forget Alexandra. You can watch her on the WeatherChannel these days, if you choose, but she looks anorexic to me.

Also remeber the Mickey Mouse club, CT. Bandstand after school, Ann pregnant with her twins, and good ole Gloria, plus all the new faces coming and going over the years.

Keep on going another 60 years, and congrats on being there for so long. :-)

My main memory is of Keith Kountz coming to Smitty's Snack Bar in Meriden to do a piece on missing children. My grandmother was an advocate for missing children and had hundreds of pictures on the walls of missing children. this was in the mid to late 80s, and boy was Keith young at that time.

Like many of you, my first thought was Hurricane Gloria. I vividly remember the coverage of the storm. It was comforting, and the only thing that could take our mind and ears off of the sound of the wind and tree branches cracking all around the house. I also will never forget when they lost Ellen Abrams (I apologize for bringing it up, as it probably brings back somber feelings). And on a lighter note. I get a kick out of hearing the old-timers refer to Channel 8 as "WNHC" still to this day, the God honest truth. Cheers to 60+ more years of Channel 8!

I was a nerd, so High School Bowl hosted by Ken Venit was one of my favorite shows. I think I spent many class periods stuffed in a locker because of that...

Robin Hood--I, too, had a crush on Gail Janis. I was too young to remember it, but my dad met her at an accident scene (he was FD Captain at the time and she was apparently covering the story) and he got her autograph for me. I recently found the business card with her greeting and signature on it.

Mick--good luck with that impeachment. Dennis Kucinich--now there's a real DC go-getter. If you want to teach your kids something, teach them that whining about politicians doesn't change anything.

There are numerous others now and thoughout the years. I think WTNH News is the BEST Connecticut News Team .

I remember much about Channel 8, mostly because growing up in North Haven that was the channel we watched (not that we had that many to choose from in the pre-cable 1970's). The memory that sticks out in my mind, however, is definitely Mr. Goober. That was a fun show. It was also fun to see the evolution of news over the last 40 years. NC8 is still waaaay better that Cable Access 3 News in Hartford. :)

A US representative introducing 35 very logical and well defined articles of impeachment against a sitting president is news. It is history being made and Channel 8 ignored it, along with all the other media outlets. You don't have to agree with it but it sure seems like censorship, doesn't it? I think it's more that it's too hard to explain to all us little people and too complicated a subject for a quick 15-second news item. So we'll just ignore it.

Our "representatives" have decided that even if Bush lied to get us into Iraq and even if a majority of us believe he deserves to be impeached if that is the case, it would be too divisive and too much of a waste of time to defend our Constitution and restore the balance of power to our system of government. Just overlook that Abramoff was in the White House, that McClellan admits that Bush knew and authorized the felonious leaking of Valerie Plame's CIA position, that Bush authorized the use of torture while publicly stating that the US will never use torture and that it would be a violation of US and international law, that Bush approved wiretaps of US citizens which he again publicly stated did not happen and would be a crime under our system of laws, etc.

Too complicated, too difficult, not worth defending our system of government and our laws. Do you ever wonder what Bush would have to do in order to be prosecuted? Do you ever wonder what he has done that we haven't heard about?

You don't have to agree with me or Kucinich, but why is the introduction of articles of impeachment not "news"???

My memories of Channel 8; You showed a picture last night, in it was someone I recognized. When I was 4 years old, my Dad brought home a TV, it had a very small screen. It was very exciting for our family because our Uncle was going to be on TV. He was one of your announcers. That first night that you started telecasting was very exciting for our family, not only to see a picture on this TV but Unk said hi to us by name. He would tell us about how he got hired and where the studio was. We have a few pictures of him in front of the microphone, he had such a beautiful voice and was a great "Unk". We lost him a few years ago, so seeing him very briefly on your news brought back some great memories. His name was Carl H. Frederickson, he is setted in the middle of the picture, the handsome guy with the mustache. My Dad (his brother) called me and asked if I had seen the picture. Dad will be 89 this year and Unk would have been 92. So I thank you for the memories! Tina Maddocks

I can remember when Channel 8 News (as well as the rest of ALL the Newscasts) actually INVESTIGATED the FACTS and then reported the NEWS. When REPORTERS uncovered CORRUPTION. Today, we just get "lip service". They all sit there and read word for word what their MASTERS TELL THEM TO READ. You ALL are nothing but "talking heads". Doesn't matter what channel you watch....you'll get the SAME LIP SERVICE....WORD FOR WORD!! And todays "drama" that these talking heads try to convey..."BOMB MAKING MATERIALS FOUND IN NAUGATUCK" (Funny!!); "MAN THREATENS COP WITH BIG BAD KILLER AFRICAN SNAKE" (I almost fell off of my chair laughing!!).
I guess the only thing one has to do to become a "reporter" these days is to be able to READ!!
You all should be ashamed of yourselves....calling youselves REPORTERS!! Don't wanna piss off your MASTERS (Murdoch/Rockefeller/Rothschild) now, do ya?!?!

One Ch 8 TV live moment I'll never forget happened around 1975-76
Back then, Arnold Schwarzenegger was well-known as a body builder, and he was visiting the area. Gail Janus was doing a live interview with him. At one point gail said, "Can I squeeze this?", and pinched Ahnold's arm.
Arnie, not missing a beat, suddenly piched Gail's breast (!!!) and asked her (in his heavy accent)"Can I squeeze THIS???"
Gail just laughed (she obviously enjoyed it!!) and I nearly fell out of my chair laughing watching this!!
The wonder of live TV!!!
If it happened today, I'm sure Arnie would be looking at a sexual harrasement suit!!
We all know what happened to Ahhnold, but whatever happened to Gail Janus????

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CH. 8!!!!

I remember when the station was not so New England/Boston focused and it was not afraid to talk about NY or Long Island. I see that you are making 'some' changes, but, while watching tonight at 10PM, I noticed that your "Covering the Nation" segment was a slick one. In it, you start off with Boston and RI stories. I don't mind as long as you did not present them as local, but I still think that you guys are being slick and still finding ways to be slick and slip in Boston/New England coverage.

I will know will you truly have an open mind when I see a "Tri-state map" on you screen, a "little news" on LI every now and then( it is our neighbor), and when you start saying things like "Queens" or "The Bronx" without putting the "New York" after it - like we don't know where it is. Finally, once those Boston sports teams are mentioned as national and not local, will I finally see where 8's mind is at.

So you are headed (somewhat) in the right direction and you are starting to understadn your importance of being the only state-wide station that is not in the Hartford area, but in the New York area, as you are on the Metro-North line and on LI Sound. Once you fully come to terms with this, then your news could be independent of Hartford news. It would actually give us a choice. When we want Hartford/Northern CT/MA news, we turn it to a Hartford station. When we want New Haven/Fairfield in the NYC area perspective, we can turn it to 8. As always, we can see stories from the whole state. I see that southern NJ does not seems to have a problem in showing only South Jersey/Philly news with NO NYC at all. Who says that CT must cover the whole state? I suppose with the exception of RI and DE, I canno imagine that any news channel in any state covers the whole state as their mission - it cannot be done.

Anyway, just keep up the progress and you will see that my responses will turn from distain into praise.

I remember Channel 8 reporting on the goings on at our State Capitol and the Late Governor Ribicoff. For hurricanes, I remember Channel 8 getting stuck in West Haven trying to cover Hurricane Donna. The truck was stuck in Savin Rock and they never got the film (yes, i said film) back to the studio in time for the news. They had to break in later in the evening. Captain Seawiskers, Mickey Mouse, Connecticut ans American Bandstand and the commercials (beer, cigarettes and cars).

I remember the horror on Nov 22, 1963 when Channel 8 broke in with the news of the Assassination of President Kennedy. I remember when the studios moved to College St in New Haven and how the reception would literally "swim" when an airplane flew overhead on a landing path to Tweed New Haven Airport (rabbit ear antenna in those days). I grew up in West Haven and Channel 8 was one of the three channels that we could receive back then, so in a very big way, Channel 8 has been a big part of my life. Thanks for being there with me!

I also remember a show on "Conn-Tact" in the early 70's that had a guest on who discussed the benefits of exercise. I remember the host asked him what the very best exercise for weight loss was, and he hesitated and then said SEX! I was shocked - and then the guy said of course that it was only appropriate that the people having sex be married. I remember Brace Gilman(?). George Thompson, Joe Francis, Syd Jaffe, Happy the Clown, Capt. "C" Whiskers, Admiral Jack, "Mis-ter...Goober", Flora and Peno Bontempi, a women's program with Jean (last name forgotten). How about Industry on Parade and "We are experiencing technical difficulties. Please stand by" two or three times a week (early 50's)? Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca, the Dumont Network, the change from Ch. 6 to Ch. 8, Merry Melodies and Looney Tunes. Remember professional wrestling on Saturday afternoon with the Salad Master commercials, and the Edw. Malley Co. ads? And the address listing in TV Guide as 1110 Chapel Street, phone: CH(apel)7-3611. The building was originally a funeral parlor and later, WICC-Yankee Network New Haven studios. WNHC radio started there in 1944, one of few radio stations to start operations during World War 2. "WNHC-TV, Channel 8, New Haven".

I grew up in NW CT in the 60's. I remember Mr.Goober, and watching "Clutch Go-Kart" as he would call it. That always cracked me up. whenever it was time for another cartoon he would say, "Turn the crank, Frank!" LOL
I wonder how many people know that Clutch Cargo was developed by an animator who had a son who was deaf. He wanted his son to be able to enjoy cartoons, so he found a way to superimpose an actual mouth over the animation cels so his son and other hearing impaired kids would be able to read the lips.

I was born in '58 on the north shore of L.I. (Port Jeff) I remember Ralph Wingate before he became one of the original Turner News anchors. My most fond memories are definately watching Mr.Goober in the morning before the bus for school came and all of us kids chanting the "Roger Ramjet" theme song.

WTNH Memory: Mr. Goober
Thursday, September 14, 1967

Just shy of my 7th birthday and in 2nd grade at Davis Street School in New Haven, I was the only kid who showed up that day to be on the Mr. Goober show. Great time eating candy and doing the hoola-hoop. At the time, my cousin was also the sales director.

As for the Ranger Andy show, I had such a crush on him and his little banjo.
I don't know why I have always had a memory of coming back from commercial, the show was live, and the Ranger saying something about shutting up the little bastard. The screen went black and we never heard anything about him or the show again.

I seem to remember Ranger Andy being on CBS on Channel 3?

I lived on the Eastern End of Loing lsland. Cable started very early there as a community antenna, but it didn't pass many houses for years. Without cable all we could get reliably were channels 3 & 8 from Conn. If you wanted to try to get NYC stations, you had to get a "deepest fringe" roof antenna which was huge. The small roof antennas most people had were caled locally "three and eights." Many of us in those days knew more about New Haven and Hartford goings on than NYC. You watched the news for years without ever hearing your own community mentioned.

I remember Sunday afternoon public affairs shows on WTNH. There was a religious show with the theme song from Godspell, "Day by Day" that was hosted by a minister, Bill Lee, I think. He didn't wear clerical clothes, and he discussed mostly secular matters. I think the show may have been called "The Eighth Day." It was an excellent show.

Another public affairs program with a Jewish perspective was hosted by Laurel Vlock. I can't remember the show's name. It also discussed secular subjects or current museum or cultural center events often focusing on The Holocaust, for example. I read that Lauel Vlock was tragically killed in a car accident some years ago.

I noticed in the above comments that many people remembered the Hurricane Gloria coverage. The East End of Long Island was hit hard by Gloria, but we never saw any TV coverage of hurricanes, because the power always was shut off as the storm approached, and then it often took days before we got power back.

This has nothing to do with WTNH, but East Enders always listened to radio station WLNG during and after a storm. The long time owner and on-air personality. Paul Sidney, stayed on the air for days teking calls from listeners who described the trees that they lost or how their frozen food was melting.

I too remember being on the Admiral Jack Show. I got to do a science experiment. Combined vinegar and baking soda in a bottle with a cork on it. The cork popped off and the experiment was a rousing success. I'd love to see that tape.

Does anyone else remember actor John Beal introducing and discussing "World's Best Movies" in the afternoon in 1956? The major sponsor was C & C Cola. The films were provided free of charge or for a nominal fee in return for free advertising time. The point was to sell soda.

I also remember Industry On Parade, 15 minute films provided at no cost by the National Association of Manufacturers, used as fillers. Each contained three or four stories examining some aspect of American manufacturing and business.
