What memories do you have of our first 60 years?
This Sunday is an important anniversary for those of us who work here at News Channel 8. On June 15, 1948--the first regular television broadcasts to originate in Connecticut began on Channel 6. What was then known as WNHC-TV began life as an extension of the radio stations with the same name and as an affiliate of the DuMont television network. It was almost the first station to make it on the air north of New York City (Boston's WBZ-TV beat us out by just six days!)
It would be five years before WNHC moved to its current home of Channel 8 in 1953 and not until 1971 before we would get our current name of WTNH. Since that day in 1948, there have been more "firsts" in Connecticut television here than on any other station--and a lot of memories for those of you who have been watching for any or all of the past six decades.
As we head towards the next sixty years, we wanted to take a moment to thank you for watching WTNH--both on the air and now on the internet--and to ask you to take a moment to share any of your memories of being a Channel 8 viewer. Just click on the comments link below and share them here with us.

My BEST memory is watching Connecticut Bandstand.
Question: During your broadcast of the 1948 election .... did Mark Davis pick Truman or Dewey to win?
jeff: Forget Alexandra. You can watch her on the WeatherChannel these days, if you choose, but she looks anorexic to me.
I remember piping everyone on board
with a kazoo-like thing.
Also remeber the Mickey Mouse club, CT. Bandstand after school, Ann pregnant with her twins, and good ole Gloria, plus all the new faces coming and going over the years.
Keep on going another 60 years, and congrats on being there for so long. :-)
EATIN GOOBERS BEANS
GOODNESS HOW DELICIOUS, EATING GOOBERS BEANS
I was on the Mr. Goober Show
I remember Bob Thomas, and Gail the weather lady ( had a crush on her)
damn, they must have missed a few
Robin Hood--I, too, had a crush on Gail Janis. I was too young to remember it, but my dad met her at an accident scene (he was FD Captain at the time and she was apparently covering the story) and he got her autograph for me. I recently found the business card with her greeting and signature on it.
Mick--good luck with that impeachment. Dennis Kucinich--now there's a real DC go-getter. If you want to teach your kids something, teach them that whining about politicians doesn't change anything.
I remember going from Channel 8 News to News Channel 8...what was the piont?? to confuse us further??
{I know, marketing, stand out from the crowd, it's now, it's pow, it's wow}
not that it has anything to do with Channel 8, but do any of you remember
CHICKEN MAAAAAAAAAAN
HE'S EVERYWHERE
I remember when it was ACTION NEWS 8 too!!
I love the interaction of Darren and Sonia in the morning... they make a great team!
The Mr. Goober Show
Launcelot Link~Secret Chimp
I remember when I was in the Cub Scouts in the early '70's and we visited the old Channel 8 location on College Street. We got to see a live broadcast and meet Channel 8 legends Bob Norman, George Grande and Dick Galiete.
yes and I do remember the plastic tri-color that we taped to the front of our black and white tv just to say we could see it "in color"....
I also remember Ken Venitt (sp?) from when I was little. And I remember being star-struck as a teenager, when I saw Geoff Fox at the Dunkin Donut's in North Haven!
Also the other weather girl...Nancy Aborn, I think her name was?
And I can probably dig back in my memory and come up with the music for Action News 8. Channel 8 was all we ever watched for news.
I was on the Mr. Goober show too! Thanks for bringing back that way way way back memory.

Nancy Aborn, I remember her too
I remeber Bob Norman became Mayor of East Haven, I went to school with his kids when they lived in Guilford
WTNH
I think you should do a retrospective special, or a series of them and show clips of these old shows and news,... I'm thinking there was another show produced there around the time of Mr. Goober.
I also remember the cartoon, Clutch Cargo, the one where real mouths were superimposed into the cartoon faces, what a trip.
I remember the box on our TV that rotated the antenna on the roof --ever so slowly
and we had stickers on the dial for 8, 3, & 4, sometimes we could get 7, 13 in NY
Our "representatives" have decided that even if Bush lied to get us into Iraq and even if a majority of us believe he deserves to be impeached if that is the case, it would be too divisive and too much of a waste of time to defend our Constitution and restore the balance of power to our system of government. Just overlook that Abramoff was in the White House, that McClellan admits that Bush knew and authorized the felonious leaking of Valerie Plame's CIA position, that Bush authorized the use of torture while publicly stating that the US will never use torture and that it would be a violation of US and international law, that Bush approved wiretaps of US citizens which he again publicly stated did not happen and would be a crime under our system of laws, etc.
Too complicated, too difficult, not worth defending our system of government and our laws. Do you ever wonder what Bush would have to do in order to be prosecuted? Do you ever wonder what he has done that we haven't heard about?
You don't have to agree with me or Kucinich, but why is the introduction of articles of impeachment not "news"???
I forgot about Happy the Clown. Thanks for that jog. CT Bandstand, yes.
Also memorable was Keith and Darren leaving (so sad) and then Keith and Darren returning (yippee!). And....where the heck is Tom Lewis?? I loved that guy.
Then you moved to College St. and then to Elm and State. You've always been part of our community and am glad you have continued growing.
Did "Top 20 Club " on AM and some weather for Brock-Hall Dairy and Old Gold Cigarettes when the could
advertise on TV
Liz, Forgot about the happy sticks. Do you remember the little ditty that we sang with the Happy Sticks?
jeff: Given all your comments about women over the past months ... you need a blow-up doll to keep you company at night.
When I was in college we all had to watch Gail Janus do the weather.
I am trying to recall the guy's name that did the sports early on . He was a fixture for many years.
Lets not forget Mike(I'm in your corner) Boguslowski driving business owners in the area nuts.
"CHANNEL 8"
I guess the only thing one has to do to become a "reporter" these days is to be able to READ!!
You all should be ashamed of yourselves....calling youselves REPORTERS!! Don't wanna piss off your MASTERS (Murdoch/Rockefeller/Rothschild) now, do ya?!?!
Back then, Arnold Schwarzenegger was well-known as a body builder, and he was visiting the area. Gail Janus was doing a live interview with him. At one point gail said, "Can I squeeze this?", and pinched Ahnold's arm.
Arnie, not missing a beat, suddenly piched Gail's breast (!!!) and asked her (in his heavy accent)"Can I squeeze THIS???"
Gail just laughed (she obviously enjoyed it!!) and I nearly fell out of my chair laughing watching this!!
The wonder of live TV!!!
If it happened today, I'm sure Arnie would be looking at a sexual harrasement suit!!
We all know what happened to Ahhnold, but whatever happened to Gail Janus????
HAPPY BIRTHDAY CH. 8!!!!
I will know will you truly have an open mind when I see a "Tri-state map" on you screen, a "little news" on LI every now and then( it is our neighbor), and when you start saying things like "Queens" or "The Bronx" without putting the "New York" after it - like we don't know where it is. Finally, once those Boston sports teams are mentioned as national and not local, will I finally see where 8's mind is at.
So you are headed (somewhat) in the right direction and you are starting to understadn your importance of being the only state-wide station that is not in the Hartford area, but in the New York area, as you are on the Metro-North line and on LI Sound. Once you fully come to terms with this, then your news could be independent of Hartford news. It would actually give us a choice. When we want Hartford/Northern CT/MA news, we turn it to a Hartford station. When we want New Haven/Fairfield in the NYC area perspective, we can turn it to 8. As always, we can see stories from the whole state. I see that southern NJ does not seems to have a problem in showing only South Jersey/Philly news with NO NYC at all. Who says that CT must cover the whole state? I suppose with the exception of RI and DE, I canno imagine that any news channel in any state covers the whole state as their mission - it cannot be done.
Anyway, just keep up the progress and you will see that my responses will turn from distain into praise.
he had a cool car Mustange convertible, (I think) & house... and I remember my neighbor who worked as a receiptionist at the station on Chapel Street...Mrs. Lillian Sullivan lived in my Grandparents home for many years...she was a great lady. Just a few memories of TV back in the black & white days...
2) News anchored by George Thompson
3) Weather man Joe Francis
4) Sports by Syd Jaffee
5) Mr Goober
6) Brad Davis
7) Connecticut Bandstand
8) The Atlantic weather man
9) Late-night station "sign-off"
10) A test pattern in the early morning
He showed up at Edgewood skating rink a few times and skated with us.
I remember the horror on Nov 22, 1963 when Channel 8 broke in with the news of the Assassination of President Kennedy. I remember when the studios moved to College St in New Haven and how the reception would literally "swim" when an airplane flew overhead on a landing path to Tweed New Haven Airport (rabbit ear antenna in those days). I grew up in West Haven and Channel 8 was one of the three channels that we could receive back then, so in a very big way, Channel 8 has been a big part of my life. Thanks for being there with me!
Medic, the 3 Stooges, Rocky and Bullwinkle. And of course George Thompson doing the news and Joe Francis doing the weather. I believe both guys also were the station announcers too. The station had everything. Happy Birthday Channel 8. What lovely memories!
I wonder how many people know that Clutch Cargo was developed by an animator who had a son who was deaf. He wanted his son to be able to enjoy cartoons, so he found a way to superimpose an actual mouth over the animation cels so his son and other hearing impaired kids would be able to read the lips.
Does anyone have an address for Mike Warren? If so, please pass it ion to me. Thanks.
PS: Are there any shows available on tape?

Just shy of my 7th birthday and in 2nd grade at Davis Street School in New Haven, I was the only kid who showed up that day to be on the Mr. Goober show. Great time eating candy and doing the hoola-hoop. At the time, my cousin was also the sales director.
I don't know why I have always had a memory of coming back from commercial, the show was live, and the Ranger saying something about shutting up the little bastard. The screen went black and we never heard anything about him or the show again.
As for the Ranger Andy show, I had such a crush on him and his little banjo.

I seem to remember Ranger Andy being on CBS on Channel 3?

I lived on the Eastern End of Loing lsland. Cable started very early there as a community antenna, but it didn't pass many houses for years. Without cable all we could get reliably were channels 3 & 8 from Conn. If you wanted to try to get NYC stations, you had to get a "deepest fringe" roof antenna which was huge. The small roof antennas most people had were caled locally "three and eights." Many of us in those days knew more about New Haven and Hartford goings on than NYC. You watched the news for years without ever hearing your own community mentioned.

I remember Sunday afternoon public affairs shows on WTNH. There was a religious show with the theme song from Godspell, "Day by Day" that was hosted by a minister, Bill Lee, I think. He didn't wear clerical clothes, and he discussed mostly secular matters. I think the show may have been called "The Eighth Day." It was an excellent show.

Another public affairs program with a Jewish perspective was hosted by Laurel Vlock. I can't remember the show's name. It also discussed secular subjects or current museum or cultural center events often focusing on The Holocaust, for example. I read that Lauel Vlock was tragically killed in a car accident some years ago.

I noticed in the above comments that many people remembered the Hurricane Gloria coverage. The East End of Long Island was hit hard by Gloria, but we never saw any TV coverage of hurricanes, because the power always was shut off as the storm approached, and then it often took days before we got power back.

This has nothing to do with WTNH, but East Enders always listened to radio station WLNG during and after a storm. The long time owner and on-air personality. Paul Sidney, stayed on the air for days teking calls from listeners who described the trees that they lost or how their frozen food was melting.
I also remember Industry On Parade, 15 minute films provided at no cost by the National Association of Manufacturers, used as fillers. Each contained three or four stories examining some aspect of American manufacturing and business.
The short version -- be nice and be respectful of other's opinions, even if they don't agree with yours, or your comment may be deleted.
