Swine Flu Fears

Posted by Chris Velardi on April 29th, 2009 at 04:49:09 pm, 2035 views

I'm just not afraid. And that scares me a little bit.

Possible "Swine Flu" cases are popping up across the country, the World Health Organization says we may be on the brink of a pandemic, and Egypt is slaughtering pigs. But I refuse to panic.

I'll be honest with you. After 9/11, I was afraid. I was concerned about the potential of more terrorist attacks and a total economic collapse. When the West Nile Virus had our collective attention a few years ago, I paid attention. Our current economic crisis and rising unemployment numbers really worry me.

Here's what World Health Organization Director General Margaret Chan said today (Wednesday): "It really is all of humanity that is under threat during a pandemic."

She's the expert, not me. So what am I missing? Or do you feel the same way I feel?

Men in Heels

TV personalities - including television news personalities - often develop a strong sense of pride because of the public nature of what they do. I'm not saying this is necessarily a good thing, but I'd be a liar if I denied it.

This weekend my coworker Chris Velardi and I are taking part in an activity that will force us to swallow our pride - and humiliate ourselves. Of course it's all for a good cause.

Let's dissect this

Posted by Darren Kramer on April 23rd, 2009 at 07:45:36 am, 1287 views

It is a right of passage for just about every kid that goes through high school... dissecting something in science class.

My memories are, its a little gross, a little stinky, and taught me a lot about what really goes on inside there.

But now, it looks like CT school kids may have the option of telling their science teacher, no thank you.

The state House of Representatives voted 114-32 on Wednesday to let students decline to participate in dissections if they have moral objections.

I am afraid my kids may also develop a moral objection to homework.

Vacation or Unemployment?

Posted by Ted Koppy on April 16th, 2009 at 10:17:18 pm, 2679 views

An employment agent I know told me about a disturbing new trend he's seen. Lately a couple of his clients have turned down job offers, not because the offers didn't deserve consideration, but because the clients have decided to take the summer off. In this economy, I was shocked to hear it.
