Fallen Icons
If you're of a certain age Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett were more than just performers. They were superstars, part of the fabric of our youth. It's hard to believe such iconic figures, that will be forever young in some of our memories, are gone.

Keno
What do you think of the Governor's plan to introduce the game Keno as a way to raise more revenue in the state?
Is it really the best way to close the budget gap? According to a study by Duke University, state lotto games are regressive in virtually all cases. In other words, the poorest citizens spend a disproportionate share of the money on these games. That's why some people call it a "hidden tax."
Do the ends, in this case, justify the means because of our state's financial situation?
I look forward to hearing your opinions.

Eco-Friendly Water Waster
For years, I've carried a bottle of water to work. I drink a lot of water as a matter of health, and during allergy season (when isn't it allergy season in Connecticut?) it helps hydrate the vocal cords. Earlier this year, I finally found a stainless steel reuseable water bottle that I like, and kissed the plastic bottles goodbye.
At the risk of sounding self righteous, it feels good to be so environmentally correct. But this afternoon, as I was washing my reuseable bottle for another day at work, a different thought wandered into my mind. As I dumped the soapy water down the drain, and then turned on the faucet to rinse the bottle, the whole experience didn't feel all that eco-friendly.
Am I really helping the planet by using a water bottle I have to wash each day? When I was using plastic bottles I would always recycle them. I guess my question comes down to whether it is better for the planet to use more water, or to use more plastic - and then recycle the plastic. Big footprint, small footprint, either way it's still a footprint. Maybe the solution is to install a drinking fountain at my desk. I'll talk to the boss about that tomorrow.

We Need MORE Rain?
Hello!
It is very hard to believe.....we are actually well below normal when you look at the running precipitation total for 2009 here in Connecticut.
As of May 27th the shoreline is 6.27" below normal and inland areas are 5.30" below normal.
This could pose a problem late Summer and Fall for well water levels if we don't have a soaking period of rain.

The Price of Saving Money
I got a new credit card, and originally it looked like a good deal. My old card offered no perks or rewards, but at least there was no annual fee. That card expired, and then I found a new one offering an impressive combination of travel rewards and no annual fee. Sign me up!
