Bird Flu: Are We Ready?

Posted by Ted Koppy on February 23rd, 2006 at 10:37:16 pm, 1467 views

I'm glad I didn't try to tackle this story before the creation of this blog. Our 11:00 p.m. newscast is one half hour long, so we are constrained in the amount of time we can give each story. There is much more that we all need to know about the bird flu and a possible pandemic, than I can fit into two-and-a-half minutes on Sunday night.
Here's what I've learned.

Local TV News is a wonderful thing. Those of us who work in your backyards want to make a difference.
The day-to-day coverage may seem like a police blotter to some, but take a real good look at our collective work, and I'll bet you'll find a whole lot more.

Would you sell your kidney?

Posted by Kristen Cusato on February 22nd, 2006 at 02:37:53 pm, 1448 views

Wow, this is a taboo subject...but it is sparking lots and lots of conversation. You can see this story on Newschannel 8 tonight. But let me tell you a little bit about what I found out, when I did put this story together.
A respected kidney transplant surgeon at Yale wrote a paper that was published in the journal "Kidney International", that supports the legalization of voluntary sale of donated kidneys. Why? Because 17 people die in this country every day waiting for organs....because there are 3000 people on kidney dialysis in this state alone....because there are 600 people in this state on the transplant list, waiting for a new kidney.

You may or may not agree with Tavis Smiley's political viewpoints, but most would agree that he is a very engaging and interesting speaker. The event was the school's Black History Month celebration, the atmosphere in the room was electric.

On Monday's 5:30 p.m. news I did a story on a new Prostate Cancer Vaccine.

Dr. Rafael Wurzel, the doctor I interviewed in the story tells me, with the advent of more experimental treatments like the vaccine being studied, researchers are hopeful to control the progression of the disease.

Toy Closets Program

Posted by Ann Nyberg on February 20th, 2006 at 05:25:58 pm, 1117 views

In 1993 I founded the Toy Closets Program at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital. Even though I got the ball rolling, it thrives because of countless numbers of volunteers in the Hospital's Auxiliary who work the program on a daily basis. Over the 13 years we have been able to help thousands of sick children from birth to the age of 18.

The Joy of Moving

Posted by Darren Kramer on February 19th, 2006 at 03:59:50 pm, 1400 views

After a month and a half of transition, this is moving week for the rest of the Kramer family. As a family, we hate being apart, so I had dreamy visions of picking up my family in Chicago, merrily driving them across country, pulling up to see the waves crashing at the foot of a Connecticut lighthouse, while the alleluia chorus plays in the background. Not quite.
