Golf and the Gilded Age
The only surprise about this week's story in the New Haven Register on Woodbridge Country Club's plan to file for bankruptcy, is that we didn't read the headline a lot sooner. I'm not claiming to know anything about that particular country club's finances. I just think it reflects a trend that has been building for a long time - even when we were being told that our economy was healthy and strong.

Change in CT Pot Laws?
Posted by Darren Kramer on January 26th, 2009 at 10:44:47 am, 3435 viewsOK everyone, how about this one:
Two Connecticut lawmakers are pushing for a change in marijuana laws. Senate Majority Leader Martin Looney and Senator Toni Harp, both New Haven Democrats, are pushing a plan that would decriminalize having a small amount of pot.
The two are pushing for a plan here like one that was passed in Massachusetts last fall. There, anyone caught with one ounce of pot or less is given a ticket, but not arrested. Massachusetts claims the change saves their state about $30 million dollars a year, eliminating the cost of arresting and investigating small time pot busts.
So what do you think? Is this a financially smart plan in these troubled economic times? Or is it telling kids (and everyone else) that a little pot is no big deal?

Gillibrand? Out of Left Field for New York?

Once Caroline Kennedy was out of the race to fill Senator Hillary Clinton's seat, (was that a mess or what?) I thought for sure New York Governor David Paterson would select New York Attorney General, Andrew Cuomo or perhaps Rep. Carolyn Maloney...but Kirsten Gillibrand was a surprise. Gillibrand was not on the radar of most.
Why Gillibrand? Looks like she would be a great help to Governor Paterson for reelection reasons...so perhaps this was among the most shrewd of choices.
Who is Gillibrand? She's a 42-year old Democrat who represents a section of upstate New York, holds more conservative views than most Democrats and is a member of the National Rifle Association...your thoughts?

An Irish Tradition
My Nana loved St. Patrick's Day. She went to a special celebration every year. It may have meant so much to her because as a teenager she came to America on a boat from a small town in western Ireland. That may be why I think every effort should be made to keep New Haven's St. Patrick's Day Parade marching on.

Profound Moment
I received this email from a viewer today, and I want to share it with all of you. Video and sound are the tools of our trade, but in this case, this woman's written words provide all the imagery we need.
The email follows:
You probably are receiving mountains of E-Mail such as this, but I still wanted to write to you and share some wonderful moments.
I am a nurse at a Nursing home in Shelton.
Staff members and residents were watching the ceremony. One of our residents, an elderly black woman, was sitting directly in front of the TV, savoring every moment. She would cheer and she would cry as our new president gave his speech.
She touched every one of us to such an extent that we were crying and cheering with her. In all my years as a nurse and watching and listening to a new president speak, I have never before felt that I was witnessing what is truly a new beginning for our country and all because a wonderful elderly woman let us all realize what this day really meant to each and every citizen of our United States of America.
Thanks for listening.

Convenient peril
Posted by Melissa Warner, Internet Producer on January 16th, 2009 at 08:51:32 pm, 3400 viewsToday we have lots of things meant to make life easier (even though paying for them in this economy is not so easy) - fast food, cell phones, I-pods, laptops, and more.
They may make our lives easier… but did you ever think about how dangerous these “necessities” can be for us and the people around us?
Sunday morning on Good Morning Connecticut, Dr. David Katz is going to talk with us about the trade-off between danger and convenience.
