The Eyes Have It!
The recommendation is that you should visit an opthalmologist every year. I didn't.
Consequently, I didn't know I was at risk for a detached retina.
I was not able to work for a total of two and half months after I was diagnosed with a retinal detachment and a tear. So it was a double whammy. I noticed it soon after flying to Naples, Florida for our spring vacation.
I had to undergo a less invasive treatment in Florida, which had an eighty percent success rate. A gas bubble was placed in my eye to help keep the retina in place. My family and I had to drive back to Connecticut instead of getting on a plane.
About four weeks later, my doctors at Yale Eye Center gave me bad news. The procedure was not successful and I had to undergo a more invasive eye surgery. I spent two weeks with my face down which was absolutely difficult. I also had a complication when my eye pressure tripled, which led to violent headaches.
I'm back at work, with some challenges. I still have a gas bubble which is slowly dissolving. The lights in the studio are glaring, making it tough to read. I also can't drive at nights. And my depth perception is weak.
How did it happen? My doctors tell me I was likely predisposed. I regret not going to an ophthalmologist every year. Had I done so, I would have been monitored closely.
When was the last time you visited your eye doctor?

St. Ricky must the patron saint of the bongos
just kidding, god you people are so stiff
Seriously Jocelyn, I sincerely hope all goes well, I have had eye injuries so I truly understand your pain. I had a motorcycle tire spoon split the white of my eye open AND YES IT HURT!!
The eyes are directly attached to the brain so there is no relief from pain unless you are unconscious, even then I think I was still in pain.
It will definately make you a stronger person.
Wishing you the best.
My exams are every two years and have been that way for a long time.
I suspect yearly exams are only necessary for those who are predisposed to eye problems.
And by the way .. eye parts are being replaced today.
Jocelyn is a perfect example of what is being said. Do as you see fit, I only know from experience and from the advice that I have been given, that two years, is too long between exams. End of discussion on my part!
I am NOT a doctor ... but it seems like her problem didn't just happen overnight. It seems like it is/was a condition with symptoms lasting years.
Best of luck to you.
Welcome Back! It is good to see you back on the evening news! Take care of yourself and your eyes!
