Throughout my career in news, I've heard over and over about those news anchors--the ones who "sit at the desk" and take those long dinner breaks. It's an unfair rap (well, for most) and if anyone puts it to shame, it's Ann Nyberg, who is constantly thinking, engaging, and pushing forward with new ideas.
WTNH viewers are indeed fortunate to have her--not just on the air (and at that desk)--but now on Twitter, Facebook, and she's probably already working a new platform the rest of us haven't heard of...yet.

Here's my problem, if I follow this correctly.
Our news comes faster and faster, if something happens in Korea, Russia, California, we have it within seconds if not minutes.
The price of that has been content and closure.
What I mean is the info is coming so fast from one story to the next there isn't enough time to get the facts.
The What, yeah, the Sensationalism of it, yeah, but the how, why, what, where, who, cause? no.
Even with WTNH's expansion of the news from the morning, noon, 5-6:30 and late and ABC news at 6:30 we still just scratch the surface of these stories because there are so many.
The public comes away thinking that they know something, when all they know is the title.
We get GW-blah, Sotomayer-blah, Palin-blah, Rell-blah.
Now with everyone walking around with "communicators" they get instant news from a controlled source, is it accurate or is it tailored for sensationalism? Not sure.
But as this becomes faster and faster competition between networks and news agencies will surely rise, making it more about attention getting than accuracy.
The plus would be more people being exposed to more news and being in tune to the world around them.
As long as they realize they are not getting the whole story, just the tip of the iceberg and should research the stories they are interested in on the net to be an informed citizen.
A network like Foxnews channel, which is a network with a series of "shows" and not a news agency could be twitting people constantly with propaganda, as could others.
Sound bites and twits should not be considered as fact from any source; but attention getters to intice a person to research that story.
If say citizen A has his twit only to get news from Fox because he's right wing and likes what they say, and citizen B gets his from CNN because he's left wing and likes what they say both citizens come away thinking they know the truth and the other is wrong.
The reality is they are both only partly true because each shapes the story according to their audience.
The truth is found independantly doing research on the net, at the library and in newspapers, objectively of course.

but on some stories we get too much info, like Michael Jackson
If we had the same type of in-depth constant coverage on our politicians in Corrupticut and DC we would not be in the economic position we find ourselves in, Rowland wouldn't have made a 2nd term, we would not have invavded Iraq, and Bin's head would be on a Lance.
Perhaps too much news makes people tune out, news overload?

Dear Ann, Perhaps YOU can help me and a lot of my friends and co workers out there. We are STILL unable to receive a signal since the switch, therefore, we have been WITHOUT TV for a month now...that's a LONG time!
We MISS you and WTNH..
It's a crying shame it had to come to this. We cannot afford Cablevision. I do not own a computer (this is being sent on another person's computer) therefore, we can't watch TV on the computer as was suggested by someone else. We did as Kirk suggested and called the FCC..they are STILL getting swamped with phone calls from frustrated viewers who lost their TV as well.
Is there any way you can suggest a stronger signal for broadcasting?
I've tried 10 various amplified antennas and 5 different brands converter boxes, I've moved the TV to the outside wall. Everything that was suggested, we did.
It's nice to have told people that after the "switch" they'd be receiving a clearer picture and better sound, but they didn't say there'd be NO picture!!!
WE MISS YOU

May I make a suggestion?
Every blog has people trying to get help because they cannot see you since the digital transition.
Perhaps a blog about that and a # they can call would help.
I know it is what it is and you are trapped by the FCC Rules but it does seem like a lot of people need some guidance.
my 2 cents, I know usually it's like $42.98 by the time I get through yakking ; )

Robin Hood: Yeah, maybe we should all go out to each poster's house and help them.
Facts, suggestions, hyperlinks to HELP, et al have been posted on various threads here on this web site. There are search engines that can provide even more information.
Is it too unreasonable to expect people to help themselves and exhaust all possibilities before spamming every thread with their tale of woe?
This "Sally" has been asked more than once where she lives. For all we know .... she lives a 100 miles away from WTNH's antenna, and has an alien force field around her house.

agreed
I was trying to give them a place to go
got news for these people
watch Blade Runner, take note of the condition of the cities, that's your future
the USA is for the rich
either you get cable or sattelite or the FCC does not care
govt agencies are run by big corporations and they set up rules so they can make more money
shut down transmitters and make them buy cable so phone co's can sell more phones
it is then called a govt mandate, that way they can all wash their hands of it

First of All, Robin Hood and the Shadow, please mind your own business, I'm directing this to Ann, not you.
And please don't insinuate that we haven't had professional advice/help dealing with our problem with not receiving signals, we are not stupid. This is a matter with the analog waves vs digital waves not being as strong and the fact that interference with buildings, trees, etc hindering the signal reaching the converter box.
Ann, to answer your question, I live in Milford, my co-worker lives in Bridgeport and my good friend lives in Stratford. All of us (including some people they know) do not receive the signal, only a Spanish station and channel 43 which is similar to a Home shopping network.
Thank you for your assistance. The FCC is still swamped with phone calls from people also not receiving signals.

oh, and by the way, one more quick note, The Reason I brought this up again was if the squeaky wheel doesn't squeak (as the saying goes), then everyone MIGHT Assume that the transition to digital is A-OK...
if no one is speaking out, then no one would know.
well, I've decided to speak out.
Thanks again Ann, Please see what you can do...I know it's mandated by our wonderful government, but maybe, just maybe, WTNH can send some stronger signal?

Sally: A few points to ponder:
1. This is a public forum. Anyone is free (within WTNH guidelines) to post whatever they wish. Having said that ... there is a thing called "netiquette". If you want to say something directly to an individual .... email or write them a letter.
2. Speaking for myself ... the only thing I may have "insinuated" is that you haven't exhausted all possibilities in the effort to resolve your DTV problem. (Hijacking every thread here with your complaints does not count).
3. Now, going to this website: http://www.fcc.gov/mb/engineering/maps/ and plugging in the 06460 zip code for Milford, we see that you are getting a STRONG digital signal for WSAH, WTNH, WCTX, and WEDW (a list of moderate, weak, and no signal stations is also included).
This means that Ann Nyberg, Sonia, and everyone else on-air at Channel 8 are ethereally flying over your house, riding on STRONG electromagnetic waves.
4. You say you've tried different signal amplifiers. Well, you could use the amplifiers from a heavy metal concert ... but if there's no signal to amplify, you will get nothing.
That pretty much leaves your antenna. If you only have an indoor antenna, you probably need an outdoor one. If you have an outdoor antenna, you may need to make it higher. Digital signals are more susceptible (than analog) to interference. If your antenna is being blocked by something ... then you are somewhat screwed. Your options then become: move, 'unblock' your antenna, subscribe to cable or satellite service, or buy all the local newspapers each day.
PS: There was a discussion in another thread, where Kirk explained the reduction of transmission power. The bottom line is ... it doesn't matter. The area covered by the digital signal is close to the area previously covered by analog.

What the chart tells you and me and what my TV actually SHOWS me are TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.
What I SHOULD get and what I DO get are TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.
As I stated, Cablevision is out of the question...if it wasn't, I would have had it long ago.
To end this, might I add I chuckled over your statement about them "flying over my house" - Cute!
And, I thought this forum was set up for Ann Nyberg to see..
So why would I e-mail or write to her directly?
Isn't that the purpose of this?
So be it.

1. If you count ALL the posts on the WTNH forum for over the years it's been active, and count ALL the posts by me ... and do some simple math, you will discover I hardly can be accused of "monopolizing" the forums. I barely show up on the radar.
2. Yes, that was my point. What you SHOULD get is not what your ARE getting. Don't blame WTNH and their power output. YOU are the problem.
Think about Sherlock Holmes and his mastery of deductive reasoning in solving problems.
3. These forums are initiated by various people from WTNH. There's usually a central topic or theme for each one ... where people are encouraged to participate by discussing the topic. It usually works, except in cases where some people have the attention span of a gnat on speed, and go off-topic to deep space.
You can Google discussion forums, blogs, threads, etc. .... and get a general understanding of suggested netiquette to be used.

I didn't see Ann's notification of it so I just want to to remind everyone to get out there and check it out, it ends July 26th, the sunflowers were just blooming when we were there Sunday, they should be peaked now.
It's a cool scenic ride and a great charity, if you are hungry go to Preston Pizza on Rt165 between Norwich and Buttonwood, we had a great lunch there, steak wrap with peppers, onions, cheese, mmmmmkiller. great fries too.
for info go to:

it's right near Pachaug Pond on Rt165
