Was so happy to see this report on TV tonight. We all know it's been going on for so long and nothing being done about it. Saw the names on the list for the PA address and think you should send it to Rev. Manship of St Rose of Lima Church. This nonsense needs to stop. It is not profiling, it is upholding the law. Why does the Country Store in East have license plates on their wall for "decoration". Couldn't they find something more decorative??????????????????????

I don't think that it is right that these people are regestering(or having someone regestering) there automobiles out of state to avoid paying state taxes. Be on the look out for wisconsin and georgia plates also. There are a lot of those in my neighborhood with "local" car dealership stickers in east haven.

I"m so Glad that they are finally catching on to those plates. There's too many and I live in the fair haven area and I always wonder why so many out of state plates. But, it's not only pennsylvania plates their are more out of state plates like georgia and more. They should find out and have them pay just like the rest of us. I pay taxes, and my fees, and insurance and they come here to pay nothing?????

These people need to be taken off the roads and put in jail. They know what they are doing and just don't care. Heaven forbid they cause a serious accident driving with no insurance. And the people who issued these plates should be in jail along with them.

I have been saying this to people for years! Another state that the CT DMV might want to look into is Tennessee. That is the state that tipped me off.

Only about one year late after I had sent in a complaint/lead not only about PA but also about TN SC WI MA GA and others. NHPD says they are aware of the problem but could not act on it during previous administrations. Don't see much enforcement even at this time. Perhaps the tax office in New Haven will have the PD get more pro-active in enforcement and perhaps area PDs will also crack down - EHPD seems to be on top of this already.

I am so happy to see someone reporting on this. When I lived in West Haven, there was a "restaurant" across the street from where I lived that ran one of these rings and not only do they cause problems for the police, and for taxes on cars, but they cause huge disturbances in neighborhoods.

There are two out of state plates at a residence in Thomaston and the state DMV has done nothing about them. I have written to the DMV Cmsr on down....the people still are driving their cars...one with a NY Plate and the other with a NJ Plate.

Why won't the state crackdown on them? If you know who to contact to get this taken care of let me know!!! It's been three years already and nothing is being done.

What about the Massachusetts that are seen all around Bridgeport? All of the autobody shops in town know that most of the Massachusetts plates aren't registered and insured..

Come to Danbury! We have so many Massachussetts and Pennsylvania plates that you'dnever know you were in CT!!!!We need to have regional DMV laws so it stops this problem. We can only stop the uninsured, illegal drivers if we get cooperation from the surrounding states.

i moved to madison in the end of august. the first thing i noticed was the extreem amount of illegal alines all over this state. after only a few months of living here i was rearended by an alien who was drunk in an unregistered, and uninsured car. he totaled my uncles 87 suburban wich is very hard to do. the result was a 2 inch hole in my leg from the brake pedal, severe whiplash, and body aches. the only thing i could do is go to a chiropractor who was forced to release me from treatment after about 5 months because my condition wasn't improving. Im in the worst situation of my life no one else will give me care because i don't have health insurance. The man who struck me is now going to be relased from jail for only 5!!! substance abuse classes(a little light.) im not even sure if my uncle will any amount of money for his car and i doubt i'll see anything. now this just doenst make any sence for me. illegal immagrants have more rights than us citizens

It's going on in Bristol too!! On Feb. 23rd of this year my car was hit by a vehicle registered in Ohio - No license, no insurance, no valid registration. The man was also from Mexico. It was his second accident in 2 weeks. He was cuffed and stuffed on the scene.

New Haven has more serious crimes to address and their police force is dealing with shootings on a standard basis, but the Chief has to make a real attempt to address this issue too. At the minimum, he should direct his traffic squad to make this the #1 priority until this problem is resolved.

it's about time some thing is being done about people living here registering their vehicles out of state. get the ones registered in N.Y we have complained in danbury (about a resident on dana rd) and have reported the vehicles to the authorities and nothing has been done. this has been going on for about 6 years now. the names and plate info. make of cars every thing turned over to the dmv, tax collector ect. multiple times by multiple neighbors. we are barely getting by and yet we pay our car taxes. why are these people being allowed to get away with not paying their fair share of taxes? they even put a fence half way across their drive way so authorities can't see their plates. they know the law and are trying to hide from it. again they have been living on this road for 6 years and the cars are registered in N.Y probably under some one elses name. this needs to be taken care of. maybe you guys can help.

For the longest time I've wanted to contact the Massachusetts DMV. I live in the Hollow section of Bridgeport, a predominantly Brazilian/Portuguese area. I knew it could not be a coincidence that all of these people were relocating to this one area of Bridgeport from Massachusetts. It's an epidemic. I hope when they catch the person(s) responsible for this that they are charged with homeland security violations, just as if they were selling social security numbers. This is a threat to our security.

I am glad this story has aired tonight. My best friend is a resident of this neighborhood and has been talking about this becoming a story for years! The part that baffles me the most is how come these residence are here illegally period? I respect the fact that some of them are hard workers, trying to make a living for themselves but they need to do it legally. Some of us who were born here, are working and struggling just as hard and it is very unfair that for so long our government has been allowing this to happen. You seem to have missed a whole segment of offenders - Snow Birds. They will begin to come back from Florida now that the weather is better along with their Florida plates. I know a number of Snow Birds that are in CT many more months than they are in FL. Why should we have to pick up their portion of our town taxes and yet provide them with the town services when they are here. Look around, as soon as Jeff promises it is warming up - they'll be back!

I hope that Meriden PD will start checking the License Plates in our area ..and why are there so many large vehicles, with out of state plates in our neck of the woods.. North Carolina,,,Pennsylvania..New York...This is uncollected property tax money...

The amount of taxes ( including back taxes) that would be collected could be substantial and should be used to put teachers back in classes and police officers back on duty.

I was sideswiped by a drunk a few months ago -- he had New Hampshire plates but lived in Connecticut. New Hampshire does no require their drivers to have car insurance so a lot of folks go there for their plates. As a result, I had to pay for the damage done to my car and I was t--ked off.

I hope they round the crooks up and soon - we pay way too high taxes to live here and so should those deadbeats.

Why should PA care? They get the registration dollars and don't have to deal with the cars on the road? If not them, some other state will do the same. Why not CT? It's an endless spiral. The real problem here is that you have 50 states all acting like the poor naked children you'd see in Brazil or Mexico. They beg for coins with one hand while sticking the other in your pocket for your wallet.

We should have one way to get licensed for our roadways and to register our cars, period. And the states should stop trying to leverage every, godforsaken transaction as a way to draw tax dollars and keep them in an endless supply of cash! WE'RE SICK OF IT! It's about time, I've lived in Fair Haven all my life, and in the recent years with the rise of the Mexican population, that's all I've seen, are these license plates. First it started out with them all having plates from Tennessee, now Pennsylvania. This is ridiculous, especially, when New Haven residents are quick to get towed or booted for non-payment of taxes, some people are really struggling, trying to make ends meet, and here they are driving around without proper registration, license, or insurance!!! I'm glad that this story finally broke, they need to be accountable for their actions!

Seeing as they have been aware of this issue for sometime and havn`t put a stop to it.
I know when I am on the road,if someone goes over the line a bit or rolls thru a stopsign or dosn`t signal,these things are just things that happen on the road and an experienced driver knows these things can happen.

I see cars parked in the parking garage in downtown everyday with PA plates. I've often wondered why, now I get it.

Why aren't you going after rich, white people who register their cars in places like new hampshire, florida, or vermont do take advantage of tax laws? Is it because you are racist? Does the station feel it can fire up an anti-minority firestorm by pointing these people out. I know they are breaking the law, so I'm on your side about that. No one should be allowed to break the law. But why is it that only focus on poor, non-white people as the offenders. This seems to be pervasive throughout your coverage of many stories like this. Perhaps a boycott is in order.

What do expect with the high cost of registration fees and surcharges, not to mention property tax and insurance on a vehicle in Connecticut? Then you have the added problem of illegals who cannot get a license or registration never mind insurance driving from our sancutary cities free of the cost and burdens of a legal tax paying resident. Alan Cohn has touched the tip there are plenty of legal residents registering out of State to avoid the high cost of having a vehicle in Connecticut.

It is not just the aliens (illegeal or legal) doing this---I have seen out-of-state registrations on cars owned by American born and bred citizens just trying to avoid paying taxes. They live in this state 12 months of the year, they use someone else's address in another state, claiming that as their home address. My neighbors just registered their vehicle in Vermont and I know they don't live there and own no property there. Yet my tax dollars plow their street, haul away their garbage and educate their children. It's not just your low income doing this--they are just the ones getting caught. Wish someone would nail this middle-class tax evader.

This is not only in New Haven. It's happening in West Haven and Ansonia as well. I see the same cars everyday with out of state plates. It really disturbs me to hear that West Haven High School accepts out of state registrations for students utilizing the parking lot. That is just unacceptable. However in the same breath I have been informed by an employee of West Haven High that many administrative members as well as politicians in West Haven do the same thing. They have second homes out of state and register their vehicles out of state. If you drive down Elm Street and or the center of town in West Haven you will find New Jersy, Pennsylvania, Mass, Vermont, Maine plates. I see the same cars everyday. I would like to see a Traffic Control position established within the Police Department for matters such as these. If anything this is where West Haven loses much of its revenue. Wasn't West Haven just complaining that their grand list was down? I wonder why. So how does DOT plan to handle this?

I, for one, am so tired of paying for these illegal immigrants who pay nothing into our tax system. Let's not forget their many children that go to our public schools, and the teachers are all getting pink slips because they can't afford to keep them.

I am so happy someone is finally bringing this to the light! I live in West Haven and they are EVERYWHERE! I've seen so many PA license plates packed with mexicans. I especially see them across the street at the package store drinking in the lot,then driving away in their illegal vehicles,( I blame the store owners for this, as they should be more attentive about whats going on on their property). I too believe the former New Haven Chief of Police Francisco Ortiz turned a blind eye to what was going on, not to mention that FANTASTIC Mayor of New Haven, who all but opened the gates at the border to illegals so the tax collector needs to take their gripe right up to stairs to his office! I think if all of us tax paying, law abiding citizens should call our local authorities every time we spot a vehicle on the road so something can be done about this.

Hey, Cohn: Did it ever occur to you that some of us with "New York Plates" actually legally live in NY? I live in Manhattan, but have a summer residence on the shore. My "problem" NY plates actually require me to get an annual safety inspection (something that CT bumpkins never do) in addition to an emissions check EVERY year.

Oh, and while we're on the subject of taxes, perhaps we should re-enstate the commuter tax, and make CT residents who work in NY pay for the police and fire protection they receive AT THE COST of us residents.

Let me see if I got this straight - The New Haven Police report a dramatic increase in the number of hit and run accidents. WTNH associates these accidents with an increase in the number of vehicles found, primarily in Fair Haven, with improperly issued Pennsylvania license plates. In the teases leading up to the story as well as Monday nights segment, all of the operators of the vehicles have been latino. In addition to the misuse of plates, they also do not have drivers licenses or insurance .... Hmmm .. Now, in East Haven, the police are found confiscating license plates found hanging on a wall in a latino store .. They are "just for decoration". Yeah right! But, we have the good father, Rev. Manship,that feels that the East Haven Police Officers are discriminating against the latinos. What the East Haven Police are doing is called law enforcement not discrimination. See what happens when the operator of one of the vehicles that is improperly registered strikes and seriously injures you (thats if they stop at all). Improper use of plates, no license, no insurance? Good luck! Chief Gallo and the dedicated men and women of the East Haven Police Department are doing what they are paid to do - Fight crime and keep us safe! It is because of their hard work that you do not have the crime in East Haven that you have in New Haven. Father Manship,maybe you need to spend more time preaching to your congregation regarding the need to follow the law and spend less time interfering with the police doing their job.

People need to have the fortitude to call the "illegal immigrants" what they really are....narcississtic hispanics. I work in New Haven. After seeing your story last night I counted the out of state plates going up State street and then Edwards for about 2 miles..43 out of state plates.

well they can not afford tax's, i would do the same thing the tax's in this state are a joke, and i am without a job and i could not afford my (1 car) tax's either, so i may have to think as they think, i will leave up to the rich in the state to pick up the slack

Well it is about time. As a retired police officer I know that this has been going on now for years and as long as the Mayor of New Haven wants to protect illegal aliens then this problem will become larger in that city and other large cities. These vehicles need to be removed from the roadways now before someone dies at their illegal use or operation

Lets see my son gets pulled over and ticketed for having 1/3 of his license plate coverd in snow.
Why not pull over every car with a PA plate and make them prove they have a valid license, registration and insurance; I Do!

If you live in CT and own a vehicle, you are obligated to pay the Tax, Period. DMV needs to fix this quickly!

I think although it is a problem, I do not fault people in New Haven because our city is the only city that collects x amount of dollars in revenue through means as boot enforcement, and tickets despite using the money for purposes such as bettering our city. I think if they are losing through them avoiding paying there taxes and insurance I am sadden with the individual but happy because the mayor has taken everything away from us no coliseum, no mall, no programs for kids, violence up, less police, bad streets, and HE WANTS THESE CITIZENS TO BUY INTO THIS CITY THAT HE HAS DESTRUCTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the East haven police have been on to something for a long time. How many out of state plates do you see on Ct. roads every day.

I was just commenting to my husband last weekend about the PA plates in Fair Haven. Not only that but if you look closely....some are photo copies...color photocopies!!! On a personal level...my sister was in a car accident that involved a car with a similar plate issue...her car was totaled and the other guy was able to drive away...with an unregistered car and no insurance and no license...now thats Madison cops for you! Something should def. be done about this...the state needs revenue right?????

Wake up everyone. this is not just a West Haven problem. This happens in Danbury, New Milford. and not just with PA plates. around here you can see a lot of Maine plates. where all you need is an address to use in ME. gets you out of paying our tax you death rates here in CT. Though highly illegal it does not stop people and probably won't. Albeit some states have no clue how to run a proper gov't and not have these easy loop holes to get past. they don;t care.

It's about time State Police came in and take Mayor DeStefano into custody on charges of aiding and abetting illegal immigrants. This corrupt mayor has done more harm to the city and will continue to do so as long as he is in office and not behind bars. There's plenty of proof by his past actions, so why isn't the State taking action? If any of these illegals kills someone, either by car or gun or knife or by choking, the mayor is co-responsible.

If we know,cars are not registered and not paying taxes to the city assisting in road maintenance, at the same time subjecting innocent registered, tax paying residents to potential liabilities and increased insurance premeiums, why are these cars not booted and impounded and the owners arrested?

news channel 8 come to danbury and talk to our Mayor Boughton about all the people registering their vehicles in N.Y when they live here in Danbury. he has not done any thing and yet they said they would be going door to door looking for those cars registered in N.Y. they have been given plenty of info. and more than enough time to correct this. it's not fair to those of us who struggle to get the money together to get our taxes paid. please address our Mayor about htis on going problem.

You don't have to go out of state to save on your registration. If you have lots of land, just register your van, car or other family vehicle as a farm vehicle and save big bucks. You can even get around the state sales tax on the gas you use. I should know, I have been doing it for years and haven't been caught. I drive all over Connecticut to maintain my investment properties, which is not farm use, and no one will ever catch me. I'm a millionaire -- passenger plates are for suckers.

Glad to see that something is being done about the Pa. phony plates this past winter I was envolved in a hit and run by a car with pa plates and I got the plate # and the state police said good luck with that because they have a lot of trouble with Pa regestration All I can say is bust them all.

No one should be above the law but sad to say there shall always be those individuals who will circumvent the law to gain their own ends. Neither the gender and age of a person nor their ethnicity as well as their occupation(s) and financial status matter to me. If a person lives and works in the state of Connecticut, then (s)he should possess a VALID Connecticut state drivers' license as well as a VALID Connecticut registration with Connecticut license plates. NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!! If a person likes Connecticut's life and its money, then (s)he must be made to pay for the privilege of living in this state. Furthermore those criminals who supply licenses, registrations, and plates should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Why should I, a law abiding retired senior citizen struggling to survive on a fixed income, pay for those persons who think that they are above the law as well as risk my life on the rare occasions that I share the roads with these scofflaws?????

I am a law enforcement officer in a larger city in CT. We see this on a daily basis, but have no real recourse to follow up on this activity. We can write the ticket for failure to register your car in the state, but this is hard to prove.

First, it is registered under a name other than the operator. Second, we can't check to see how many have the same address as the report shows. Last, we have to prove that the operator is the owner and does live in CT.

Cities pay thousands of dollars to private firms to run around and track this type of activity. Officers do not have the resources available to them to do this type of investigation.

Even if we write the ticket, our department does not have any type of follow up paperwork to forward to City Hall so they can catch these scoflaws.

We also see a number of people who register their vehicles in their parent's name and address. Along with this type of registration I have seen cars registered to people who are listed as dead on their licenses and those who have cars registered to them, but have no license. The system must be improved.

Someoe hiy my sons car on Jan 31,2009 in new where he was visiting a friend and the person came out of a driveway and hit my son park car and kept going /as my son was walking to his car he seen this happen and he called new haven police which someone did come out and take the report and also went to the person house where the truck came from and no one said they new the driver which was a lie because the drivers is at that house every morning to pick up people for work.my son later got the tag number ad call the police back and he gave them the plate number and still today iam waiting for someone to fit my sons car. they never tried to contact the but the have the tag and the registration of this person but still no one have done anything. i need help the car is register in south carolina i have the address where is is register. can some person contact me on this matter....

If you want a second license plate abuse, investigate all of the dealer, and repair shop plates permanently affixed to cars that are being misused.

I live in East Haven and someone must have hit my 2008 Elantra in a parking lot - I had to have the rear quarter panel fixed.

I'm now wondering if this was an illegal with a PA plate. Who knows? All I can tell you is, illegal or not, if I find out you don't have insurance and you hit me, I just might take it out in kicking your a**!!

I would actually pursue this even without that person having insurance. I would demand from my insurance company that they try to collect from this person, even if they have to attach their wages, to see if I can get my money back!!

If an unregistered, uninsured car damages another the expences are not covered for repairs of the car or people who may get hurt.
You can`t get registered until you prove insurance.
If everyone is legal,it is much easier on everyone all around,because the insurance companys are reciving a steady income of registered cars so just in case there is an accident we are covered.
That can be very expensive,especially if hospital stays are in the equasion.
If the insurance companies have the money to back up the accidents.
this takes the stress off so many involved.
Insurance is a great back up system and when everyone eventually does come out of the shadows and fesses up and gets Insured and registered,they will...ready...be, "set free"!

Hello. I've never blogged, but was compelled to make a couple of comments on this subject. First,this is a much more widespread problem than indicated on the broadcast. It is a regional problem. I live near Danbury and have had many near misses with individuals who by appearance are not indigenous to Connecticut! And they either do not know our rules of the road or simply have very little experience behind the wheel of a vehicle. They have no right being behind that wheel! Nor have they earned the privilege to be on OUR roadways. My taxes pay for those road's upkeep and improvement and these individuals do not pay taxes. As an unemployed construction worker, maybe I am a jaded source of information, but I believe that someone who does not pay taxes, insurance, or registration and license fees has no rights in OUR country. Secondly, has anyone other than myself noticed how vehicles in our own neighborhoods have out of state plates in their driveways? My folks live in Vermont and I could probably easily get license plates from that state. Thereby circumventing Connecticut's exorbinent insurance premiums and property taxes. As a man of conscience I will not do this. Maybe it's just me, or maybe this is another can of worms yet to be opened!

Thanks to the mayor of New Haven we are having this problem. I just received my insurance renewal with a increase due to all the uninsured drivers in New Haven according to my agent. The police hands are tied in New Haven. Keep up the good work East Haven PD.

I think that there sould be a sepret area to get a license at Department of Motor Vehicles for not legal imagrents for a shortend period of time perhaps half a year. but they must have inshurance and regestration. There going to drive regardless of the conciquencis so my soulution would solve the problum,I think.

It's not just PA plates, folks. I live in Manchester, and there are a plethora of plates from states as diverse as NJ, TX, NY, GA, OH etc. Where is the enforcement on residency? If it were enforced as much as the seat belt and cell phone laws, the state's financial issues could be reduced.

Mayor Boughton of Danbury has set up a task force to go after people like this,That was announced last year in our local paper, heard about it one more time in the paper and then after that never again.Did Danbury stop the program or what?You never get an answer from the city hall and if you Talk to the mayor`s assisant, all he says I will let the mayor know and look into it . That means not a priority for the City of Danbury and we have plenty of money that we don`t need to go after these people that are not paying taxes

Chris counted 43 out of state plates in less than a 2 square mile area. We pay over $500 to our town for hubby, mine and son's cars. Do the math $500 X 43 = $21,500. That's a nice chunk of change for New Haven's coffers. Multiply that by however many square miles New Haven has and you may even see your taxes GO DOWN if these taxex are collected - actually I am sure everyone would love to see more cops on the streets. That would be a great place to spend the money.

But don't ignore the Snow Birds. Jeff Fox said it is starting to warm up this week and sure enough I saw one fly by shortly after.

Problem is only going to get worse unless the states which have low standards are forced to elevate them. Frustrating to say the least. I suppose our law enforcement could start targeting out of state tagged vehicles but the ACLU would go bonkers if they did that.

We can all thank DeStefano for provoking this situation....but yet the working taxpayers are getting slammed with cuts in services due to lay offs!

Maybe the long lines for FREE services will prompt the illegals to reconsider calling New Haven home....

New Caster is wrong and DMV has no say as to whether vehicles are taxed you need to reader CGS 12-71b,g. Before making comments that are erroneous. You should contact the New Haven Tax Assessor as to the taxability of vehicles before making comments like that and the guy from NY will have to pay taxes sorry.

I live in the north east corner and have a neighbor of 4 years with five vehicles all registered in Rhode Island . I even went to the town hall to complain they are not paying taxes or registrations and got no where. Another neighbor with a motorhome registered in Montana they have never been there . Why is this fair.

I recently saw an electric utility aerial bucket truck with advertising on the side for Ancona and Siegel Law Office on the side while I was in Newington. The truck had a Connecticut Farm Plate on it with the number -- 41910. What kind of farming do lawyers need a truck like this for? Is this fraudulent use of a farm plate?

I Think the abuse of dealer and repair plates needs to be looked into also. There is a dealer in my neighborhood who is not paying taxes on several cars because he has dealer plates on all of them. This is not fair and it makes me think there is a lot more dealers and repair shops abusing our tax system.

it is amazing, my niece who neglected to pay her New Haven car taxes had her car towed and had to pay the taxes plus towing which she deserved but what about these PA plates holders they just drive around the city, no insurance, no license and they don't get picked up because the police can't be bothered;the city won't be able to collect on these cars because they are not registered; give out more id cards Mr. Mayor;this is what you end up with a city full of non paying individuals living along side hard working middle class residents who work hard living paycheck to paycheck - what a joke.

I was hit by an illegal on Jan 18th this year. He had a snowplow on the front of his car and hit me so hard he sliced through my mini van. Thank God I had just dropped off my 7 year old son who was sitting in the seat where the metal plow cut through!

The driver had no drivers license. The North Haven police department was given a false insurance card. And you guessed it, the car was registered in PA.

The address for the driver is a false address. The driver was arrested for driving without a license and then released. I have no way to recover the loss of my car or my medical bills which are mounting. I am a single mother of 4, and I am currently unemployed. I have lost my investment(11K) in my car which I just bought a year and a half ago.

These illegal drivers need to be put in jail and shipped back to wherever they came from and all of their property, should be confiscated to pay for the damage they have caused. I don't understand why some people think it is ok to allow these people to not follow our laws. I have to assume the cost of the accident against my own insurance policy which will inevitably cause my insurance costs to skyrocket. So not only have I lost my car, my money, the feeling in one of my hands and am still enduring severe pain in my back, but I have to pay for all these costs and I will be paying for higher insurance for years. The police should be pulling over every PA. car and checking the validity of the drivers and their addresses as well as their auto insurance.

I am a letter carrier for the U.S post office I work in Fair Haven and I see everyday out of state plates from Ohio, Penn, & Mass. This is a major problem. If this people are paying x amount of money to get fake registration and plates. No insurance so if you are in an accident with one of them mostly it will be a hit and run because of the fake registration and no insurance so if you don't have full coverage for insurance then you screwed. Someone needs to crack down on this fast

There are TONS of New York license plates in Freehold,NJ,i dont ever remember seeing a sign that said welcome to NY.It is a problem here in NJ,all the hypocrit NY'ers that talked bad about NJ for years are all now flocking by the drove to places like Freehold,sometimes i see more NY plates thatn NJ,i am confused as to where i am.
