Out of State Plates
What's the most popular neighborhood in Philadelphia? The Fair Haven section of New Haven!
I know that's a little sarcastic but as our latest Count on 8 Investigation reveals, if you drive a round Fair Haven it's hard not to see a car or truck without Pennsylvania plates in just about every block.
What's going on here?
Our friends in Pennsylvania have made it really easy for residents of the Keystone State to register their cars. It's so easy; the system has opened itself up to fraud. No drivers license, no identification? No problem!
The result; we have a lot of people here in New Haven and else where driving around with Pennsylvania plates because for whatever reason they can't legally register their automobiles.
Who cares? Well, the city tax collector should for one. New Haven is loosing a huge amount of money in these tough economic times because these drivers aren't paying property taxes on their vehicles. And since many of these motorists also don't have insurance there's big problems if there's an accident and police believe that's what's responsible for the skyrocketing number of hit an run accidents in the Elm City.
What's you opinion, we'd like to know!

Why won't the state crackdown on them? If you know who to contact to get this taken care of let me know!!! It's been three years already and nothing is being done.
Nothing like a story about illegal activity perpetrated by a segment of the population that has never been welcomed despite their contributions to that community.
There is a clear implication that Latinos alone, are breaking the law, no one else right. Black and white, good and bad just like the lowest common denominator likes it.
Nothing about police harrasement of local businesses owned by Latinos. What about license plates that hang at Restaurants like TGIF how come cops don't ask them to take those down? We all know the answer.
By the way, any visitor to the US CAN drive with a license from his country and an international license!
Is it a coincidence that the reporter found a Hispanic male to harass and no one else?
What happened to Bill is a raw deal, but the problem is with the system and immigration policy. If given a chance all undocumented residents would normalize their status and get their paperwork in order, but the politician won't allow that and other folks suffer the consequences.
is issuing them Penn. plates and fake insurance with there id cards.
New Haven has more serious crimes to address and their police force is dealing with shootings on a standard basis, but the Chief has to make a real attempt to address this issue too. At the minimum, he should direct his traffic squad to make this the #1 priority until this problem is resolved.
its coming from somwhere... i wonder where!!

(or do nothing, but complain about it)
The amount of taxes ( including back taxes) that would be collected could be substantial and should be used to put teachers back in classes and police officers back on duty.
I was sideswiped by a drunk a few months ago -- he had New Hampshire plates but lived in Connecticut. New Hampshire does no require their drivers to have car insurance so a lot of folks go there for their plates. As a result, I had to pay for the damage done to my car and I was t--ked off.
I hope they round the crooks up and soon - we pay way too high taxes to live here and so should those deadbeats.
I cant drive across the damn Mexican border without insurance OR buying thier overpriced insurance, why is it they can come up here, dont register a car, dont by insurance, dont do emmission testing and the the mayor of SANCTUARY CITY whines like a friggin baby for money?????
Next time someone gets T-boned in SANCTUARY CITY and the car that hits ya occupants run like friggin rats deserting a sinking ship when they hit you and when the cops show up and tell ya " well, the plate is stolen, there isnt much we can do for you, SORRY...." sue the damn cesspool city for allowing a haven for these damn people to come to.........better yet...BOYCOTT the 3rd world craphole.............
We should have one way to get licensed for our roadways and to register our cars, period. And the states should stop trying to leverage every, godforsaken transaction as a way to draw tax dollars and keep them in an endless supply of cash! WE'RE SICK OF IT! We're already looking to add layers of bodies to start policing out of state internet purcahses because, God forbid, some grandmother purchases a Christmas gift for her grandchild online and doesn't pay CT it's tax.
I'd love to see the tide turn against the tax and spend politicians, but obviously the American public is to ignorant. Dodds running a tie in the polls when he should have ZERO percent vote. Kennedy can get elected in MA even if they removed his brain from his skull because the people up there have their heads so far up the Kennedy rear-ends its pathetic, and we now have the biggest spender EVER sitting in the white house. Oh well. We're screwed.
I SAY HIRE A SPECIAL WORKFORCE AND START TOWING JUST LIKE THEY DO WITH THE BOOTFINDER
Seeing as they have been aware of this issue for sometime and havn`t put a stop to it.
I know when I am on the road,if someone goes over the line a bit or rolls thru a stopsign or dosn`t signal, these things are just things that happen on the road and an experienced driver knows these things can happen.
Just like a child learning to ride a bike or just being themself.
But (deliberatly)falsifying registrations to avoid taxes and insurance,is the epitimy of piracy.

I'm so glad this story came out.
I just hope and pray that something will finally get done and not sweep this investigation under the carpet like everything else.
Oh, and while we're on the subject of taxes, perhaps we should re-enstate the commuter tax, and make CT residents who work in NY pay for the police and fire protection they receive AT THE COST of us residents.
Any other bright ideas , Cohn?
P.S: You're not in the same league as Channel 7 (the REAL ABC station)!
Why not pull over every car with a PA plate and make them prove they have a valid license, registration and insurance; I Do!
Why are they any different?
took towards illigals, you are getting
just what you deserve.
Thanks again for reporting this issue!
First, it is registered under a name other than the operator. Second, we can't check to see how many have the same address as the report shows. Last, we have to prove that the operator is the owner and does live in CT.
Cities pay thousands of dollars to private firms to run around and track this type of activity. Officers do not have the resources available to them to do this type of investigation.
Even if we write the ticket, our department does not have any type of follow up paperwork to forward to City Hall so they can catch these scoflaws.
We also see a number of people who register their vehicles in their parent's name and address. Along with this type of registration I have seen cars registered to people who are listed as dead on their licenses and those who have cars registered to them, but have no license. The system must be improved.
I'm now wondering if this was an illegal with a PA plate. Who knows? All I can tell you is, illegal or not, if I find out you don't have insurance and you hit me, I just might take it out in kicking your a**!!
I would actually pursue this even without that person having insurance. I would demand from my insurance company that they try to collect from this person, even if they have to attach their wages, to see if I can get my money back!!
Taxes or no taxes.
If an unregistered, uninsured car damages another the expences are not covered for repairs of the car or people who may get hurt.
You can`t get registered until you prove insurance.
If everyone is legal,it is much easier on everyone all around, because the insurance companys are reciving a steady income of registered cars so just in case there is an accident we are covered.
That can be very expensive, especially if hospital stays are in the equasion.
If the insurance companies have the money to back up the accidents.
this takes the stress off so many involved.
Insurance is a great back up system and when everyone eventually does come out of the shadows and fesses up and gets Insured and registered, they will...ready...be, "set free"!
Worring when you are a criminal shackles you to nightmares,be free, get legal...The narrow path of being legal broadens your horizens, how well if you are legal you can go two traffic light without holding your breath, that you wont get busted.

I hope Mayor Boughton is watching Channel 8 news and maybe start doing something about this big problem in our town too. What does the governor have to say about this problem. thanks again for you reporting on this . and keep us all update on how this works out
Adam, you and the illegals are the problem not the solution.
But don't ignore the Snow Birds. Jeff Fox said it is starting to warm up this week and sure enough I saw one fly by shortly after.
Maybe the long lines for FREE services will prompt the illegals to reconsider calling New Haven home....

Wait til you see the tab for this one East Haven.
I'm thinkin maybe a 25 or 50 million dollar lawsuit will shut your racist mouths real quick.
Can you say 50 mil tax rate ???
BWAAAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!
The driver had no drivers license. The North Haven police department was given a false insurance card. And you guessed it, the car was registered in PA.
The address for the driver is a false address. The driver was arrested for driving without a license and then released. I have no way to recover the loss of my car or my medical bills which are mounting. I am a single mother of 4, and I am currently unemployed. I have lost my investment(11K) in my car which I just bought a year and a half ago.
These illegal drivers need to be put in jail and shipped back to wherever they came from and all of their property, should be confiscated to pay for the damage they have caused. I don't understand why some people think it is ok to allow these people to not follow our laws. I have to assume the cost of the accident against my own insurance policy which will inevitably cause my insurance costs to skyrocket. So not only have I lost my car, my money, the feeling in one of my hands and am still enduring severe pain in my back, but I have to pay for all these costs and I will be paying for higher insurance for years. The police should be pulling over every PA. car and checking the validity of the drivers and their addresses as well as their auto insurance.
"matter to me. If a person lives and works in the state of Connecticut, then (s)he should possess a VALID Connecticut state drivers' license as well as a VALID Connecticut registration with Connecticut license "plates. NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!! If a person likes Connecticut's life and its money, then (s)he must be made to pay for the privilege of living in this state. "
