"It passed the Senate on a unanimous vote...nearly unanimous in the House" That right there says that other Senators agreed that the money deserved to go there. Neither he or his girlfriend financially benefitted from it, the state did. I don't see a problem with it.

Having ties to a suspected mobster and pitching woo to a lobbiest are two entirely different things! And as laurie said, the money stayed in the state coffers.

I don't think these two situations can be compared. Attempting harm on someone is not quite the same.
I am glad to see that maybe -just maybe - our elected officials are finally being held accountable. Perhaps if they think they will be "called on the carpet" our best interest might become a consideration.

I don't know for sure what gain this senator has, but I would feel better if he had no personal involvement. Especially in a matter that has such an impact on the states financial commitments that will ultimately cost the voters dearly in the years to come. So far, the governor is the only one standing in the way of the Democrat onslaught of spending on questionable projects such as this. The people need all the facts that are relevant regardless of the directions they come from. The Hartford Courant is hardly in the pocket of the Republicans and historically has been supportive of the Democrat Socialist agenda. I am a little surprised that they printed this story.
The Democrats have been very aggressive at finding dirt on the Republicans locally and nationally. Possibly this is payback that is well deserved.

mark...tommy and i have known each other since childhood, we even went to the same state university...tommy is a stand up guy, he checked with the ethics people, and got their ok...and it was a unanmaus vote in the state senate...

tom has always been big on education, and on going to bat for his constituants...when my younger brother died unexpectitly 4 years ago my poor parents got the run around from the ME's office, "inconclusive"
tommy got us answers within 48 or 72 hours, putting my parents at ease...

absent my personal sentiments with a friend, this looks like republican "tit for tat"...and intruding on a personal relationship, uncalled for!!!

Uh... yet another member of our state senate is in legal trouble eh? Pfft... betcha one could be blindfolded then randomly toss a ball amidst CT's legislative yahoos with a better than fifty percent chance of beaning a corrupt politician. We lost our state to bribery, deceit, and greed decades ago. Far as I'm concerned... hanging should be brought back for committing crimes while holding public office as a deterant.

Are we really that paranoid? If someonehas a good idea and it deserves to be approved what does it matter if it was your girlfriends idea? Nobody would have complained if it was my girlfriends idea. So whats the big deal. Human paranoia and I'll get you back garbage. We are so lame it is disgusting.

I am a democrat and I feel that Mr Gaffney could have used a little better judgement, especially considering that we live in a time when political tit-for-tat is the norm. He certainly would have been smarter to either wait until this bond issue was voted on to pursue the relationship, or if he was already involved, he should have recused himself from any involvement in the project. However, if it passed nearly unamimously, that means to me that republicans signed on to the bonding too.

To those of you who call this questionable spending, why wouldn't you want to support our state college system? Don't we owe it to our children to offer them the best possible education? have any of you priced tuition at a private college versus our state college system? Why wouldn't you want to make sure these schools are the best they can be?

john c...that was a U.S. rep from mississippi or alabama or some southern state like that...his name was "JOHNSON" i think... i agree, 'some' polititions are so crooked they can see around a corrner...

i also agree that supporting the state universitys is important, we are just expanding the 21st century version of what the founding fathers wanted under british rule back in the 1600s, an educated, and enlightened population ( i know i'm streaching it a bit)

Mark thanks for the clarification. I was wondering because I read a poll that 90% of the news organizations and journalists are Democrat. So Republicans and Independents are in the minority. Also, I think a politician who has a personal commitment could be more swayed than being on the take financially. Personal commitments can be a very strong influence.

Tom Gaffey's a stand up guy alright - too many wives and children, all dumped, to count and then bedding down with a married woman and helping destroy her marriage as well. He's a real stand up.

The nearly billion dollars in bonding money did not get the usual scrutiny - nobody knew what it was for, what projects it would cover - in short, there were no details. "it's just for educaton."

Gaffey's problem is not with the voting for this round of glutonous spending again on "education" - it's that he used his influence to deliver the project without revealing any of the details including that he's sleeping with the chief proponent. It is a conflict - moral and ethical - his payback was not in his hip pocket - it was in his fly. He proved he could "move mountains" for my friends and he wanted to rock Jill's world.

Could anyone else get a billion in bond money without building a strong coalition of pols to support it? Unless one were dropping their drawers and lifting their skirts? Not likely. This should be investigated and it should include President Pro Tem Don Williams, Gaffey's good buddy. He went along with this too. This package of borrowing should be dissected so we all know what we're paying for and what's expected. Perhaps then we may come to believe there is a long term benefit for Connecticut and not just a two minute roll in the hay for a powerful state senator and an employee with questionable morals.

Yes our children deserve a solid education but raising the standards for graduation is not the way to do it. If people do not want to graduate at the current level what makes our state gov. think that raising the bar will help? It will only isolate more children. We have to get oiur children up to par b4 we can even think about raising the bar. Are our Elected officials even thinking at all?
