If he has more proof than just 270 votes as an excuse, one vote is enough, that doesnt mean an election should be overturned just because it wasnt a landslide....... I thought he had some proof of tampering???

There is a good book that Caruso should read. Shut Up, Stop Whining & Get A Life by Larry Winget.

If the man has no proof of wrong doing, then he should let it go. Don't care if he only lost by 50 votes, if it is on the up and up, tuff, he still loses.

Bridgeport suffers from Electile Dysfunction and the Caruso campaign has the right to seek prescriptive relief from the state Supreme Court. "You can't believe in Santa........Ayala".

Chris has not met the standard that would indicate that his opposition acted with deliberate intent to take votes away from him. The Superior Court found so and the appeal will sustain the lower court.

Comment from: Jill K. [Visitor] Email
I agree with "envoy5" that Caruso will likely not prevail in his case.

That said, I don't really know what to think, except how pathetic it is that only 9000 people voted. In a city of approximately 150,000 people, that is sad. I did a quick search to find voter registration numbers in Bridgeport but couldn't find any. But that just has to be a low turnout.
11/02/07 @ 08:37
Comment from: JJ [Visitor]
Sounds like a low turnout, but I think people are getting disgusted with politicians. Seems we go to vote as we feel the person we chose will do good for us, then when they get in, their as corrupt as the last guy. These politicians better start doing what they promise, people are fed up.

Comment from: Jill K. [Visitor] Email
I agree JJ, but if everybody who DIDN'T vote got together in the country, (or in this case in the city of Bridgeport) maybe they could find a decent candidate and they'd make up the largest voting bloc of all.

As far as I'm concerned, if can vote but you don't vote, you deserve the politicians you get, and you lose your right to complain.

I really don't know what to think about if it was tampering or not. I have not seen anyone prove it was tampering so I am lead to believe it was just a very close election..

Too bad if what Jill K. says is true that less than 10% or so of the registered voters did not vote...

That doesn't say much for any candidate then, does it....
11/02/07 @ 11:51
Comment from: CJP [Visitor]
Correction: I meant to say that ONLY 10% of registered voters voted......

Jill K., I agree with you 100%. Even right now, there is noone I like running for Pres. in 08, but when it does come down to us having to vote, I will. Just because anyone is not 100% behind a candidate, doesn't mean they should not vote. If nothing else, vote for the one you think is the best of 2 evils, and least you know you tried.

Approximate Bridgeport amount of voters.
Democrats: 36k
Republicans: 4.5k
Unaffiliates: 16k

Bridgeport will probably not break the 30% threshold in this election.

When the media stops doing their job and investigating, everyone loses. Florida 2000, Ohio 2004, Lieberman's missing $384K from his primary with Lamont, Cheney making millions from Halliburton and the privatization of the war AND security at all US military bases (did you know that? I didn't. I'm sure it was on "the news", right?), etc. etc. etc. Most of the politicians are corrupt and now they just steal right in front of us and lie about it because they know that nobody will expose the truth. Rudy blatantly lies in his latest campaign ad about healthcare in Britain. Why? Because he can. Until the media returns to its reason for existence, we are doomed to the current cesspool of recycled politicians (sons, wives, etc.) and rampant corruption. Shut down the blog, drop the celebrity gossip and go after these guys! It will be like shooting ducks in a barrel - they'll never expect it.

The statistics of any primary is that a small numer of party "loyalists" put together the party's nomination. Whether it be Bridgeport Mayor or A national candidate such as President. Anybody that wants to influence that needs to join a respective party. From what I have read, I am not sure any of the challenges would have changed the outcome of the primary and Curuso should accept the outcome and let the regular elections procede as planned.

Mick, agree with your assessment of the media not digging deeper. The philosophical question is why? I'm not so sure it is simply the fault of the media. We the American people are the consumers of what the media produce. Most people don't demand the media do a better job. Most people are more than willing to swallow the soundbites and not look deeper. We the people. We get the media and the politicians we deserve by our lack of activism and participation.

John S, I couldn't agree more that voters need to get involved in the primary stage of voting. This is the sole reason why I remain a registered Democrat. If Connecticut election laws allowed unaffiliated voters to vote in primaries, I'd withdraw from the Democratic party just to make a statement, because I am fed up with the party. But as it stands here in CT, I remain registered with the party to vote in the primaries.

I never understood why more people don't get involved in the candidate selection process. It makes me sick to think that the party machinery will come out and Hillary will be the Democratic nominee. If more people got involved, I'm certain she wouldn't get the nomination. On the Republican side, well, they're all too conservative to ultimately get my vote in the general election, but I'd at least admire and respect Mike Huckabee or Ron Paul. But as it is, Giuliani the Belligerent or Smarmy Romney will probably get the nomination. Ewww.

Political shenanigans by both parties occur all over the nation but rarely do they have an impact on an actual outcome.

In order to manipulate an election past a couple percentage points, one would have to orchestrate overt methods that are easily detected... this is certainly not the case in Bridgeport although some irregularities have occured and probably should be investigated.

Mick, the myth of past media honesty and impartiality is just that... a fabrication by modern society when they reminisce about "the good old days." The press has always been exploitive and sensationalist.

If we didn't care enough to really investigate Florida 2000 or Ohio 2004, nobody cares about Bridgeport 2007.

I heard an old-time journalist state that in "the good old days" they didn't have to make a profit in journalism. They went for the story. Steve, call me naive, but I believe there were some decent, honest people in the media. I also think that "heros" like Woodward & Bernstein were just lucky that someone leaked the story to them. But there were hard-working, inquisitive investigative reporters who would probe, ask the tough questions, do the leg work and expose the truth. I'm sure there was corruption at all levels of government and media, just like today. But it wasn't as easy for politicians to just drift along without taking a stand or blatantly lie when the facts were obviously in direct contradiction. Somebody would've called them on it. If the media doesn't return to their roots, we'll never see any crooked politician resign in disgrace again.

Caruso is a sore loser looking for full time employment at a much higher salary. This is the guy, who as state rep, floated the idea of a full time legislature, as if the damage they do in six months is not enough - and he wanted to triple their wages. Then he decided to run for mayor and lost four square.

If you want to see corrupt city politics -you don't have to look in Bridgeport. Look in New Haven where half the Board of Alders have jobs through political patronage, where DeStefano/Voight cram their machine chosen candidates down the throats of the electorate and where plantation politics and intimidation rules everything from the Tweed Airport to the BOE, the BOA and more.

Don’t’ let the apparent change in philosophy concerning the Norwich re-zoning displayed by the city council fool you. If there weren’t so much voter opposition to the re-zoning, with elections looming this week, Crooks, Caron, and Goldman would still be sponsoring this travesty.
Who sponsors a proposal and then says they are relieved that it is withdrawn? I’m sure you’re relieved Ms. Caron. You saw your re-election slipping away.
Remember, the city council is made up of the same people who were ready and willing to pull residential property out from under us in favor of commercial property until they realized it might affect the election. If re-elected, what’s to stop them, from sponsoring the same re-zoning and the potential eminent domain takings like in New London, once the threat of not being re-elected has past.
These people haven’t miraculously had an awakening. They are and will continue to be the same people who were willing to take your property indiscriminately.
I strongly urge the Norwich voters to ensure this doesn’t happen. Vote for Zarnetske, Coutu, Nash, Jacaruso, Desaulniers, and Braddock.
VOTE OUT those individuals who would support the taking of homes in favor of commercial development. Those individuals are the incumbents Caron, Crooks, Goldman, and Bettencourt.
