The Most Depressing Day
Today is the most depressing day of the year. According to a Psychologist at Cardiff University, in Wales, January 23 is the most depressing day of the year. Dr. Cliff Arnall cites the cumulative effect of the miserable weather that comes this time of year, mounting debt, the time that has passed since Christmas, failed New Year's resolutions, and a lack of motivation.
But hang in there. Meteorologist Gil Simmons tells me we are about to hit the bottom of winter in a matter of days. After January 26, our temperatures here in Connecticut normally start to gradually warm up.
So, until these dark days pass, try to force yourself to take action. Dr. Arnall says keeping mentally and physically active is the key to staying happy this time of year.
Outdoor activities - even in the bitter cold - help me beat the blues. What works for you?

One aspect of Winter is that our social lives take a dip... Spring and Summer there are always barbeques, beach days, and other activites to do but in the colder months, folks usually stay home more often and putter about the house. Mild cabin fever definately can occur during this season as people get into the wake up, go to work, watch TV, go to sleep grind. Try livening things up a bit by regularly inviting friends over for supper.
We hosted a themed party a couple weeks ago.... used one of those boxed murder mystery kits you see in the bookstore to set the tone and it worked. The program was a gangster era one so our guests all showed up in psuedo 20's costume in charictor (I wore a pinstripe suit with a fedora and the wife dressed like a flapper...) Took a little prep work but the end result was a very fun evening. Was really surprising when my Sister in law's husband hammed up his role... he doesn't strike one as the theatrical type.
hehe
I lock myself in the barn and work on custom cars wih the tunes cranked, I also play my drums, hike, snowshoe if possible, catch up on things inside the home, outside work is for the summer so it will balance out.
It is easy to fall into depression at this time, try to figure what you would like to do and do it, this time of year is a great time to go to state parks etc NO CROWDS, NO SCUMBAGS THROWING GARBAGE ALL OVER, it is great
even if it is just reading that favorite book, do it
etc. Any of those allow me to recharge
my batteries and come back to face the
world.

Fingers are crossed for at least one BIG snow storm.
