I've lived in West Haven all my life and grew up on Ivy Street (off Ocean Avenue). I still live in the house I was raised in. Back in the 50's and 60's the guys next door and across the street worked at Winchester's and even then I recall them whinning about not getting enough overtime, their hours getting cut or; worse yet, layoffs. Some of the lucky one's found work at Marlin's while others went to Sargent's and other shops. Like heart attacks... few people drop dead without having prior warning episodes. So too... the workers at Winchester's knew all along they were on a floundering ship but; like many of us, held out for a miracle and opted to stay on. It would be nice to think that a generous philantropist like Michael Herzenberg will rescue this American icon from relocation, but violence with guns, wars, Washington lobbyists for or against and new proposed legislation to hold original firearm purchasers liable if their weapon is lost or stolen have all played some part in the unpopularity of the subject. Start a blog about a sports stadium or downtown block conversions like Ninth Square in New Haven and it'll be headlines for months.
