The Storm Watch Is On
Here we go. The most powerful storm on the face of the earth is about to make a very close pass to our region. It has been a long time since we last had a hurricane, and it is so easy to forget how fickle these storms can be...

Working towards HD
It's been a couple of months since I initially wrote about the work going on behind the scenes at News 8 as we revamp our engineering department for our eventual switch to HD. I don't go back into the engineering area that often, and I have to say I was surprised by all the work that's gone on over the summer.

"No one needs to hear that."
A few days after the horrible scene in Manchester where eight employees of Hartford Distributors were shot to death, two others wounded and the gunman then took his own life--we continue to be asked by a small number of people why we have used the word "Massacre" when describing this story. This criticism is usually accompanied by a question or even an insult to our own sensitivities, asking why we can't think of the families and friends of the victims.

I'm Retiring...
After nearly 20 blogs, I have decided to hang up the old keyboard. I want to thank the readers who have read my blogs, and showed support. On second thought, maybe there's still something left in this blogger. I feel like maybe I've got a view good blogs left in me. But then again, my wrists hurt from years of typing, and I don't want to blog if I can't type at 100%. Nah, screw it, I'm back in.
Yes, this is a Brett Favre blog. This guy has jerked around football fans for the past 6 years, and now rumors of his THIRD retirement have surfaced. And now comes reports that the Vikings are offering more money in an effort to keep Favre around for another year, and reports of his retirement may have been premature (GASP).
Say what you will about LeBron murdering a fan base on national television. Farve is a serial killer of fan bases. Green Bay, New York, and now Minnesota have all fallen victim to Favre's game. He holds ESPN hostage each summer with the news of retirement. And each time, we have to hear the stories of Favre's legend. The consecutive games started streak. The Monday Night Football performance in the wake of his father's death. The Super Bowl ring. His three MVP awards. And the time he fell the entire California redwood forest when he threw a laser beam pass to Babe, his blue ox. Wait, the last one was Paul Bunyan? My bad.
Let's face facts, Favre is not the greatest ever. He holds many of his records be default. When you play that many games in a row, you're bound to rack up some record along the way. Is he top 10 all-time? Yes. Greatest ever? I would take Montana, Peyton Manning, John Elway, and Dan Marino over Favre any day. (Yes, I know Patriots fans will protest Tom Brady not being mentioned, but anyone could be a great quarterback when your coach knows exactly what the other defense is calling)
Alright Connecticut, who else is tired of Favre's annual retirement talks?

Was It The Hottest Month?
Last weekend, the National Weather Service released the information that the average temperature in Windsor Locks was 77.2 degrees - 0.1 degree above the record for July of 77.1 degrees set in 1994.....but this week, a correction was given..the average "just" tied the old record of 77.1. No new record was set. I know, this past July was as warm as any month, and the difference is only academic. It has been a hot summer, a hot year. Only did January average a little cooler than normal.

Can You Hear Me Now?
We've all heard of the dangers of driving while talking on the phone or texting. But lately it seems there is a new place where cell phones and technology are causing serious traffic problems: the supermarket.

They Keep Rolling
Wednesday brought yet another round of violent storms to the region. "Small" tornadoes(what an oxymoron) struck in east Litchfield, Thomaston, Terryville, and Bristol. Fortunately, we had little direct structural damage, but the tree damage was enormous. Where the damage was not related to tornadoes, we had downbursts of straight line winds which could have reached wind speeds exceeding those within the tornadoes....100 mph. This is a hot, humid, busy summer, and it just refuses to simmer down.
Click here to see viewer-submitted pictures from the storm.
Here is the story: A cyclonic flow from Canada is pushing southward into Connecticut while a massive, humid "Bermuda High" sends moist unstable air in our direction from the south. The two are on a collision course, and add to that a strong jet stream now and then, you have the makings of severe weather. The strong jet stream provides and outflow which lifts the air and assists in the tornado formation.
The pattern seems to want to stay. I'd keep an extra set of batteries within easy reach.
